Palestinians celebrate UN victory

@lissnup

The news of the UN General Assembly’s decision to upgrade the Palestinians status was the cue for wild celebrations across the West Bank and Gaza.

In Ramallah, thousands hit the streets for a frenzy of flag-waving and fireworks.

Many in the crowd expressed their delight at the UN’s decision and their pride in President Mahmoud Abbas following his speech to the UN.

“I’m so proud, like a Palestinian, I’m so proud, this President represents me, he reflected our dreams in such a tremendous way,” one woman said.

Adnan Al-damiri, a major general in the Palestinian security service said, “There is a struggle between the Palestinians and the Israeli government. And today we have won a point in this struggle. We will continue to win the points until we get independence.”

In the city of Bethlehem, the bells of the Church of the Nativity rang out in honour of the vote.

ITALY: Strong tornado struck Taranto area in Puglia province, 20 hurt, 1 missing – 281112 2105z

A strong tornado hit Taranto area in southern Italian Puglia province today around 10:30 CET.

A powerful tornado on Wednesday struck a giant steel plant in southern Italy at the centre of a major labour dispute, leaving 20 workers slightly injured and one missing, as storms lashed much of the country.

Another video (much more closer):

The missing worker at the ILVA plant in Taranto is believed to have been operating a crane at the port which was swept out to sea by the wind.

“Divers are searching for him,” Lino Ursi, a spokesman for Taranto’s mayor said.

A chimneystack was partly destroyed by the strong winds and explosions could be heard inside the closed facility, officials said.

A regional emergency official, Fabiano Amati, said the storm had also struck a nearby school and six children had been lightly injured.

The ILVA plant, which is the biggest steel mill in western Europe, has been shut since Monday because of a long-running dispute over pollution levels. The company said there had been “heavy structural damage” on the facility.

If a powerful tornado was not enough…

From dangerously high winds in the south, to snow and freezing temperatures in the north with high water and flooding in Venice, all of Italy was in the grip of miserable weather Wednesday.

Snows clogged the Colle della Maddalena and Colle del Tenda passes in the mountains between Italy and France and, with no openings likely until later this week, truckers and travellers were forced to detour.

The bad weather, which comes after a similar wave of storms wreaked havoc earlier this month, also slowed searchers seeking three climbers who disappeared last weekend somewhere on Italy’s highest alpines slopes.

It is hoped that the trio, all experienced mountain climbers, have found some shelter from the inclement weather. Weather alerts were Wednesday issued for seven Italian regions.

Strong winds were also a major problem in Italy’s southern province of Campania, where civil defence authorities warned of heavy rains. Authorities in Tuscany were issuing similar heavy rainfall warnings as downpours brought by storm system Medusa raised fears of still more flooding.

Rainfall forced a temporary closure Tuesday of the rail line between the cities of Pisa and Genoa, and the Aurelia highway near Carrara. As many as 28 people were forced from their homes by floods in the city of Carrara, reminding people of severe flooding earlier this month in many parts of Tuscany.

More should be done to protect the region, Carrara Mayor Angelo Zubbani told Mediaset television. “Fifteen days after the previous flood we have this storm hit us, we’re a fragile area with open wounds,” he said.

In Venice authorities were cautiously hopeful that the high water, which had reached 103 centimetres, will be lower than earlier forecast. Waters were flooding about 10% of the historic city’s centre, lifted higher still by the force of sirocco winds.

Twelve men to be mutilated and executed by Libyan militia for allegedly being gay

Twelve men face mutilation and execution for allegedly being gay after being captured by an extremist Libyan Islamist militia.

The twelve men were, apparently, having a private party in Ain Zara, a suburb of Tripoli, the country’s capital, when the militia captured them, late on Thursday night (22 November).

The group boasted by posting the pictures of the men on Facebook, describing them as the ‘third sex’ (a term used in the Arab Gulf area to denote ‘queers’) including one of the men who had a henna ‘tattoo’ on his back.

One of the pictures was accompanied by the Quranic call ‘there is no power but the power of Allah!’

At the time of writing, the picture of the men received 121 likes, 118 shares, and mainly violent comments such as ‘flog them hard!’, ‘let them see bullets!’, ‘free Libya! [ie from gays]’, ‘ride them like camels’ and so on.

Human Rights Watch Libya left a comment saying the organization hopes the men will not be treated inhumanely and called upon the militia to hand the men to the civil authorities (the comment received no likes).

The militia Facebook page entitled as the ‘special deterrence unit’ boasted that the men were captured doing the ‘practices of the people of Lot’ (ie gay sex) and that they are to be mutilated and executed.

The militia also claim they have now become a legal part of the Libyan Ministry of Interior.

The group states its mission is to remove ‘corruption’, ‘vice’, alcoholic drinks and now gays from the streets of Libya.

Human Rights Watch Libya identified the group as the Al-Nawasi militia, who are considered to be extreme Salafists

The militia has been previously been reported as being responsible for attacks against Sufi (moderate form of Islam) shrines and followers.

Gay Star News has, so far, not been able to independently verify the reports.

Speaking with Gay Star News, a Libyan LGBT activist nicknamed Khaleed stated: ‘We never had any gay nightclubs in Libya, so it is not uncommon for Libyans – straight, bisexual and gay men to party in a private space, drink, dance, have fun and sometimes even have sex.

‘That fact that they were captured by this extreme Salafist militia is very worrying.

‘The situation for LGBT people after the revolution generally improved, people can meet each other more easily than under the Qadaffi [Gadaffi] regime, although, of course we still have to be very discreet and careful.

‘Many of us fear that some of the militias [there are over 250 of them in the country], which are extreme Islamists who are very well armed and financed, will focus on the LGBT community and hunt us down.

‘The police is largely absent or powerless so Libyan civil society has a real problem; the militias often take the law onto their own hands.

‘That the Al Nawasi militia claims they are now part of the Ministry of Interior is very worrying; this move should be unacceptable to the public and to civil society groups.’ ”

UK: Historic change at the General Medical Council (GMC) – 231112 1315z

The General Medical Council (GMC) (See*1) has today confirmed the make-up of its new smaller Council (See*2) in an historic move for the 154-year old organisation.

The appointments are part of a series of reforms to the GMC’s Council which was 104-strong just over 10 years ago and marks a major milestone in reforming medical regulation in the UK.

In 2003, the Council was reduced from 104 to 35 members and was reduced again to 24 members in 2009.

The current Council of 24 established the principles of independent appointment and having an equal number of medical and non-medical (lay) members.

From January 2013, the Council will be reduced in size to 12 members and will be led by its Chair Professor Sir Peter Rubin, who himself became the GMC’s first appointed Chair since the regulator was established in 1858.

The new appointments were made after a robust selection process led by Sir Peter and three other experienced assessors, independent of both the GMC and government.

The GMC is the independent regulator of the UK’s 250,000 doctors.

The GMC controls entry to the Medical Register; regulates all stages of medical education; sets standards of practice and takes firm but fair action where those high standards have not been met. The role of the Council is to set high level strategy and hold the executive to account for delivering that strategy.

Professor Sir Peter Rubin said: ‘The move to a smaller Council is an historic change and will play a critical role in setting out a clear vision and direction for the GMC at a time of great change for doctors and patients.’

‘The current Council has delivered a range of major initiatives to protect patients and improve the quality of healthcare, including major reforms to our fitness to practice work, the establishment of the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service and perhaps most significantly, the introduction of revalidation, which starts in December.’

‘I am really looking forward to working with my new colleagues as we continue to make our contribution to improving medical education and practice across the UK.’

The GMC’s Council appointments have been confirmed by the Privy Council:

The Privy Council has approved the following appointments, recommended by the selection panel chaired by Professor Sir Peter Rubin:

  • Dr Shree Datta
  • Lady Christine Eames
  • Professor Michael Farthing
  • Baroness Helene Hayman
  • Lord Ajay Kakkar
  • Professor Jim McKillop
  • Professor Deirdre Kelly
  • Dame Suzi Leather
  • Dame Denise Platt
  • Mrs Enid Rowlands
  • Dr Hamish Wilson

The new Council will start its term of office on 1 January 2013.

Footnotes:

*1. The General Medical Council registers and licenses doctors to practise medicine in the UK. The law gives us four main functions:

  • Keeping up-to-date registers of qualified doctors
  • Fostering good medical practice
  • Promoting high standards of medical education and training
  • Dealing firmly and fairly with doctors whose fitness to practise is in doubt

*2. The Council is the governing body of the GMC. It is responsible for the overall control of the organisation. It ensures that the GMC is properly managed and that the organisation fulfils its statutory and charitable purposes to protect and promote the health and safety of the public by ensuring proper standards in the practice of medicine. It has an equal number of medical and non-medical (lay) members and includes at least one person who lives or works wholly or mainly in each of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Uganda: Ebola virus outbreak kills 5, 2 other cases confirmed, 18 suspected, contacts 40 – 231112 1100z

(Image: wikimedia.org)
1976 photograph of two nurses standing in front of Mayinga N., a patient with Ebola virus disease; she died only a few days later due to severe internal bleeding and hemorrhaging.

One person succumbed to the Ebola virus Sunday, bringing the death toll in the latest outbreak of the dreaded Ebola haemorrhagic fever in Uganda to five.

The victim, a 29-year-old woman, died at Bombo Hospital, some 30 kilometres north of the capital Kampala, where she was admitted on Tuesday last week.

Halima Nakimbugwe is said to have contracted the disease while nursing her husband, a boda boda rider, who was the first person to die in the latest epidemic in Luweero District.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Rukia Nakamatte, said Nakimbugwe died yesterday afternoon at Bombo Hospital, where results of the tests carried out confirmed that she had contracted Ebola.

Two other people confirmed to have been infected with the virus have been admitted to Mulago Hospital.

Another 12 suspected to have been infected with the virus are also admitted to Mulago, while another six are at Bombo Hospital.

“The number of confirmed Ebola patients remains the two admitted to Mulago Hospital, while the number of contacts has risen from 34 to 40. These are being monitored both in Kampala and Bombo,” Ms Nakamatte said.

Another person, this time from Mbarara in the western region of the country, was also admitted to Mulago yesterday after he presented signs of the Ebola fever.

His blood samples have been taken for tests and results are expected soon.

In Luweero, a burial team set up by the District Ebola Task Force to ensure that bodies of those confirmed or suspected to have Ebola are handled and buried by a special team, yesterday narrowly escaped lynching by mourners who snatched a body from the Nakatonya Muslim Cemetery in Bombo Town Council.

According the Luweero District disease surveillance officer, Mr Richard Kawenyera, the mourners armed with clubs, sticks and stones accused the special burial team of violating Muslim burial rites by wrapping the dead body in a bag.

They insisted on washing the body before burial as part of the Islamic rites.

“We are worried because we do not know what happened afterwards. The blood sample was taken to the Uganda Virus Research Institute and the results had not been received to confirm whether or not he died of Ebola. If a positive result turns up, these people will have touched the body of an Ebola victim,” Mr Kawenyera said on Saturday.

The Luweero District Health Officer, Dr Joseph Okware, said the man’s body had been taken to the Nyimbwa Health Centre IV by relatives, after he was found dead in a store at Ndejje University on Friday.

“They wanted us to ascertain the cause of death since he is a resident of Kakute Village in Nyimbwa Sub-county, where there has been an Ebola outbreak. We handled the case carefully until we got information that the mourners had grabbed the body from our team.”

A special isolation centre for both the suspected and confirmed cases is being set up with the support from the Medecines Sans Frotiers, at Nyimbwa Health Centre IV, where patients are expected to be transferred to from Bombo Military Hospital on Monday (today).

In Nakasongola District, traditional healers have been banned from admitting patients whom they do not know following the Ebola outbreak which has claimed two lives in the neighbouring Luweero District.

This follows reports that an Ebola patient from Luweero may have been rushed to one of the traditional medicine men’s shrines in Nakasongola before she died. This has sparked off panic among local residents.

US: Justin Bieber Will Not Be Charged in Alleged Photog Battery – Updated 22 Nov 2012 1645z

28 May 2012: CALABASAS, California (AP) – Justin Bieber is wanted for questioning by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s investigators after a photographer complained of being roughed up by the pop star at a shopping centre.

WANTED: JUSTIN BIEBER

Justin Bieber is wanted for questioning after a paparazzo claimed Bieber assaulted him on Sunday, TMZ.com reports.

The photographer claims a physical altercation ensued after he tried to take Bieber’s photo in Calabasas, Calif. When cops arrived, Bieber and his girlfriend Selena Gomez had already left the scene. After complaining of pain in his upper torso, the photog was transported to the hospital, where he filed a police report.

Witnesses at the scene told police the photographer was blocking Bieber’s car. Police officers, who are investigating the claim as a misdemeanor battery, are now trying to track down Bieber, Gomez and any other witnesses to get both sides of the story.

TMZ.com said that Justin was in Calabasas, where he lives, just after noon Sunday at a mall called The Commons. A paparazzo attempted to take Justin’s picture and, according to law enforcement, some sort of physical altercation erupted between Justin and the camera guy.

The photog called 911, and when cops arrived Justin and GF Selena Gomez had already split.

Amongst the articles on this story that are doing the rounds on the internet is this, from http://laist.com :

The accuser is a photographer–well, okay, a paparazzo–who told deputies when he tried to take photos of the famous couple, Bieber physically battered him.

Bieber and Gomez left before the LASD showed up, though.

The photog insisted on filing a criminal report, to which the LASD obliged. He said he was in pain and needed medical help. “The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and later released,” add the LASD.

It could be, though, that the idea to file came as a suggestion from someone at the scene. TMZ has some follow-up from the melee at the mall:

We’re told several witnesses at the scene say after the altercation, a lawyer walked up to the photog and said he could get a lot of money out of the incident and advised the dude to call for an ambulance and file a police report.Additionally, the paparazzo’s role as pure “victim” may have been just at eensy weensy bit exaggerated, according to TMZ’s sources:

Witnesses also say the photog had been blocking Justin’s car as the singer was trying to leave. Justin got out of the car and asked the guy to move away but he wouldn’t, and a scuffle ensued.Still, the LASD are taking this seriously:

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Malibu-Lost Hills Station detectives are investigating the incident. Any with information about this incident is urged, contact detctives at (818-878-1808). Or if you wish to remain Anonymous, call LA Crime Stoppers by dialing 800-222-TIPS (8477), texting the letters TIPLA plus your tip to CRIMES (274637), or using the website http://lacrimestoppers.org

To be fair to Justin, his side of the story has not emerged yet, and he is, of course, innocent until proven guilty

31 May 2012 Update: So where is Justin?

“The latest reports tell that the “Baby” singer could face criminal prosecution for a misdemeanor battery after allegedly getting into a scuffle with a shutterbug on his way out of the movie theaters with girlfriend Selena Gomez in Los Angeles on Sunday.

According to TMZ, The Los Angeles Police Department have turned the case over to the Los Angeles County District Attorneys office, which is a typical scenario for high-profile cases.

Although a spokesperson for the D.A.’s office tells Gossip Cop prosecutors have yet to act, prosecutors are referring to the case as a criminal prosecution.

Following the incident the 19-year-old tweeted, “gonna focus on the important stuff. the music.”

Authorities have requested to talk to Bieber about the altercation but he jetted off to Norway and it seems he’ll be across the pond for a little while.

Justin tweeted yesterday, “ok. going to board. OFF TO EUROPE! PHASE 1 of operation secret concerts! lol. OSLO first stop (G: Note link below). See u soon….and…when i land #DieInYourArms and #BOYFRIEND will be out!! Countdown and then #BIEBERBLAST !!!! thanks! see u soon. much love. #BELIEVE”.” – celebrity-gossip.net 29 May 2012

Justin Bieber and Carly Rae Jepsen booed at sports final

BBC Newsbeat Page last updated at 15:57 GMT, Monday, 26 November 2012

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber has been booed at a Canadian football final in Toronto.

“The star was jeered along with fellow Canadian singer Carly Rae Jepsen at half-time as the pair were about to perform for the crowd.

They were also booed as the stadium announcer introduced the pair and it continued as Justin Bieber sang a medley of his hits, which included Boyfriend and Beauty and a Beat.

“Thank you so much Canada,” Justin Bieber told the crowd. “I love you.”

The Grey Cup is the championship game of the Canadian Football League (CFL), a form of gridiron closely related to American football.

Carly Rae Jepsen

Earlier in the week, 18-year-old Justin Bieber was presented with a diamond jubilee medal by Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

He was criticised by some Canadian football fans after wearing overalls, unbuttoned on one shoulder, a white T-shirt and a backwards baseball cap.

Stephen Harper wrote on Twitter: “In fairness to [Bieber], I told him I would be wearing my overalls too.”

Former Grey Cup half-time performers have included guitar bands such as Nickelback and Lenny Kravitz.

Carly Rae Jepsen, 27, received a mixed reaction to start with but managed to win the crowd over during a medley of her latest single, This Kiss, and her worldwide hit Call Me Maybe.”

Behind-the-scenes pictures of the Duke of Cambridge working as a helicopter search and rescue pilot have been released for the first time today.

The pictures show a typical “day in the life” for William in his work flying RAF Sea King helicopters from their base at RAF Valley on Anglesey.

From planning and preparing for any emergency callout to resting with his colleagues during “downtime”, the exclusive pictures give an insight into the life of Flight Lieutenant Wales in his day job as a search and rescue (SAR) pilot.

80% of MPs want airline holiday sales within Atol

Eight out of ten MPs (81%) agree that airline holiday sales should be included within the Atol consumer protection scheme, according to new research.

MPs from all parties support extended consumer protection, with 93% of Liberal Democrats, 91% of Labour MPs, and 63% of Conservatives supportive, according to the results of an Abta poll of 150 MPs released ahead of of tomorrow’s House of Commons debate on Atol reform.

Abta estimates that 38% of the public travelling on flight-based holidays remain unprotected by the Atol scheme of financial protection.

Including holidays sold by airlines within the Atol scheme would both help reduce consumer confusion and ensure more travellers are protected, the association claims.

The House of Commons debate will focus on the Transport Select Committee’s report, which recommends that airline holiday sales should be included in the Atol scheme.

The report was published in April when Flight-Plus and other Atol reforms…

Airliner encounters severe turbulence over Atlantic, plunges 1,000 meters (3,300 ft), 30 slightly hurt – 201112 1415z

An airliner flying from Havana to Milan abruptly plunged some 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) when it hit unusually strong turbulence over the Atlantic on Monday, terrifying passengers and leaving some 30 people aboard with bruises and scrapes, airline officials said.

The flight continued to Milan’s Malpensa airport after the plane’s captain determined that it suffered no structural damage and two passengers who are physicians found no serious injuries, Giulio Buzzi, head of the pilots division at Neos Air said.

The ANSA news agency quoted bruised passenger Edoardo De Lucchi as saying meals were being served when suddenly there was “10 seconds of terror.”

He recounted how plates went flying and some passengers not wearing seatbelts bounced about.

Buzzi had said that the drop measured some 3,000 meters (10,000 feet) in a cloudless sky.

But Milan daily’s Corriere della Sera’s web site, quoting Neos official Davide Martini, later reported that the plane first bounced up some 500 meters (1,650 feet), then dropped some 1,000 meters (3,300 feet) to some 500 meters (1,650 feet) below the original altitude.

Black Elk Oil rig explosion in Gulf of Mexico: 11 injured airlifted to hospital, 2 missing, 9 unhurt – Updated 181112 0200z

The U.S. Coast Guard in New Orleans confirms there was an offshore platform explosion in the Gulf of Mexico that happened around 9:15 a.m. Friday.

It is believed to be off the coast of Grand Isle in Federal Waters.

Capt. Ed Cubanski with the U.S. Coast Guard says contrary to previous reports there have been no confirmed deaths from the explosion.

The platform is a production facility.

There were 22 people on the platform at the time of the explosion.

Two people are reported missing, 11 were initially airlifted to local hospitals, and nine were uninjured during the explosion.

Officials say crews from other oil rigs were helping to evacuate the people on the platform, and hopefully the two missing people are with another crew.

The search for them continues.

A hospital spokesperson says two of the critically injured were airlifted to the Baton Rouge General-Mid City Burn Center from a hospital in Marrero, LA.

Two are still en route to Baton Rouge from the hospital in Marrero, LA via ambulance.

The hospital says the two that are already at the Baton Rouge hospital are in critical condition with major burns. There is no word on the other two victims.

The Coast Guard activated a “command center” in Houma, LA to investigate the incident.

A cleanup crew been dispatched to handle any possible pollution.

Capt. Cubanski says there is an oil sheen that is about one half mile by 200 yards.

A Coast Guard crew out of Morgan City, LA will help lead the investigation into the accident itself. They say it’s still too early to get an exact pinpoint on how the accident will impact the environment.

John Hoffman, the CEO of Black Elk says “It’s very tough. We’re almost like family and when something like this happens, it tears at our hearts.”

Hoffman says their thoughts are with the victims and their families.

“It’s a horrible day but we are going to hold together. First and foremost we have to take care of those who were involved.”

The U.S. Coast Guard says the platform was “shut-in” meaning production had been stopped so crews could perform repairs.

Workers were using a torch to cut a 3-inch line that was 75-feet long when the explosion happened.

There was about 28 gallons of product in that line. The fire is out and there is no oil believed to be leaking into the Gulf of Mexico.

A Congressional source says the Gulf oil rig fire caused by an acetylene torch cutting an oil line.

An official said the platform in question is a shallow water platform located in West Delta Block 32 in the Gulf of Mexico, about 25 miles southeast of Grand Isle, south of New Iberia on the south-central Louisiana coast.

Plaquemines Port Authority was immediately notified by the Coast Guard and are on stand-by in Venice to support the Coast Guard.

The Coast Guard is on the scene with multiple boats and aircrafts.

Three commercial vessels are also on scene. ES&H clean-up has been dispatched to handle any possible pollution.

They have set up their command center in Houma. Black Elk Energy, a Houston-based company, has a platform in that area, but it is unknown if that company owns the one that had the explosion.

Black Elk Energy Offshore Operations, LLC, announced in October that drilling and major rig work on the first of the 23 wells started in November.

The preliminary report says a worker was cutting a pipe that had oil in it and it ignited.

The fire has been extinguished. The preliminary report also states an oil sheen can be seen in the water.

Sources say the structure of the platform is intact with no structural damage from the explosion.

Official blog of the Met Office news team

We wrote only last week that it seems that it is the time of year again for colourful headlines about an impending big freeze.

We had them at this time last year, which prompted our Chief Executive to write an opinion piece in The Times. Now we have very similar stories again, with the front page of the Daily Express declaring last week ‘Coldest winter freeze on way’ and warning that temperatures are set to plunge as low as -15C and again a week on we have another front page from the Daily Express which declares ‘Coldest winter for 100 years on way‘. with the UK expected to grind to a halt within weeks.

These longer range forecasts for December and January have not come from the Met Office and a look at our current 30 day forecast provides perhaps a more measured assessment of our weather prospects…

Spain: Heavy rain, waterspouts and flash flooding, in Malaga, Andalucia – 171112 2130z

Heavy rains for the last two days, together with waterspouts on Saturday morning, have caused flooding in Málaga province, with the worse incidences being in the capital city of Málaga.

With the province still recovering from the flooding in September 2012, it has now happened again.

From around 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, emergency calls were coming in for more than 300 incidents, caused by heavy rains and flooding in the province of Málaga.

The Andalucian government delegation activated the Emergency Flood Plan at level 1.

Most of the emergency calls were from Málaga city, with flooded homes, garages, premises, cellars and road network problems.

Fortunately, so far no injuries or deaths have been reported.

The rise in the level of streams and rivers has caused some flooding in Málaga city, particularly Paseo de Sancha, and in the Casabermeja orchard.

Many branches, trees and other objects are lying in the roads due to the wind and heavy rains.

The problems apparently started with three waterspouts which occurred consecutively.

Several of the main arteries of Málaga city, including Avenida de Andalucía, have been flooded, with trash bins swept away by the waters, and some residents had to use their canoes to move in areas such as the Pedregalejo promenade.

The Cerrado de Calderón traffic tunnel, part of the ring road of Málaga, was temporarily cut by landslides this morning in the direction of Cadiz but has already been reopened.

The Guadalmedina River, which runs through the center of the city is usually dry, but today was awash with water.
