US: 3 Alarm fire in Webster, MA forces 2 men to jump out 2nd floor window – Speculation that fire hydrant not working, delaying water to blaze – 310513 1220z

(NECN: Kathryn Sotnik)

“A fire has destroyed a house in Webster, Mass. It forced people inside to literally jump out the second-floor windows.

The 3-alarm fire is at 4 Goddard Street. Fire officials are on scene at the multi-family home.

Everyone did get out safely, however one man is badly injured after jumping out of a second-floor window.

There were five people at home when the fire started. There were two people on the second floor and three people on the first.

The two people on the second floor were two 49-year-old men. Both of them had to jump to safety out the second floor window. The first guy to jump out the window apparently broke his hip and was rushed to a local hospital.

NECNs Kathryn Sotnik spoke with the second man, John Noga, who jumped out the window but only has minor injuries.”

“Fire in Webster, MA – 4-something AM. Across from the corner of Lake and Harris St. Heard some of the neighbors talking about hearing on the scanner that the fire hydrant wasn’t working and another one was taken out. Please note that this is hearsay and I can’t verify this one way or the other. It appeared that the blaze was going for quite some time before the firefighters were able to get water on it.”

Zimbabwe: Speeding bus hits herd of cattle on Beitbridge-Masvingo highway, leaving 6 dead, 37 injured – 300513 1530z

Six people died and 37 others were injured when a Pioneer bus ran into a herd of cattle and landed on its side at the 237km peg along the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway.

(Photo: africanseer.com) Zimbabwe bus accident kills 6, injures 37

ZRP Officer Commanding Beitbridge, Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo confirmed the accident, saying the bus, which had 55 people on board, was coming from Johannesburg.

He said the bus driver, who was speeding, lost control of the vehicle after hitting one of the cows and the bus landed on its side, killing five women on the spot and the bus conductor.

The injured passengers were taken to Beitbridge District Hospital. Chief Superintendent Chinhengo urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads to avoid accidents.

6 killed, 37 injured in Beitbridge accident

Thupeyo Muleya Beitbridge Bureau
Six people were killed while 37 others were injured, three of them seriously, when a Pioneer bus ploughed into a herd of cattle 40km along the Beitbridge-Masvingo Road on Tuesday night.

The incident occurred at around 10:30 pm near Matshiloni area where police and officials from the Civil Protection Unit spent the whole night trying to retrieve the bodies from the wreckage.

They managed to pull out all the bodies at around 5am yesterday.
It is reported that the bus, which was coming from Johannesburg, South Africa, tried to overtake a haulage truck oblivious of oncoming traffic and later hit a cow as the driver tried to avoid an imminent head on collision.

Among those who were killed were the bus conductor and five passengers, all women, and they have since been taken to Beitbridge District Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
The police officer commanding Beitbridge district Chief Superintendent Lawrence Chinhengo said yesterday that the bus had 55 passengers on board.

He said they suspected the accident was a result of speeding.
He said the victims’ next of kin were yet to be notified.

śIndications are that the Pioneer (Yotung Model) was travelling to Harare from Johannesburg being driven by Big Chirimuta.
śThe bus had 55 passengers on board and when they were 40km out of Beitbridge along Masvingo road, the driver overtook a haulage truck oblivion of oncoming traffic. When he tried to avoid a herd on collision he ploughed into a herd of cattle,ť he said.

Chief Supt Chinhengo said as a result the bus hit one of the cows and turned 360 degrees to face Beitbridge town before lending on its side.
He said in the process six people were trapped under the bus and died instantly, while 37 other including Chirimuta were injured.

śThree of the passengers were seriously injured including the driver and they are still admitted at Beitbridge district hospital where their condition is reported to be stable,ť he   said.

Chief Supt Chinhengo said 33 other passengers were treated and discharged at the same hospital.
He said the matter was still under investigations.

He also urged motorists to always abide by the basic road regulations so as to avoid the unnecessary loss of life.
śWe want to urge all road users to always abide by the laws of the land so as to avoid the unnecessary loss of life. Investigations so far reveal that the accident was a result of speeding, something which was avoidable,ť he said.

Investigations by this paper recently showed that some criminals who operate along the same area (Matshiloni) are in the habit of driving cattle into the road and cause accidents thereby opening opportunities to loot valuables.

In some cases they even put boulders on the road and pounce on motorists when they stop to clear the road. Several motorists have been robbed at the same point while others lost their lives due to the road accidents orchestrated by these criminals.

Last year police arrested over 13 robbers who have been terrorising road users on highways leading to Bulawayo and Harare.” – herald.co.zw

Underage Teen Sex: Is a Girl Being Prosecuted for Being Gay?

Health & Family

Teen romance is tough enough when you’re not accused of breaking the law.

But that’s exactly the predicament Kaitlyn Hunt, a high school senior from Sebastian, Fla., finds herself in. Hunt, 18, was arrested Feb. 16 for dating her girlfriend, who was 14 when the alleged crime was committed. She’s charged with lewd and lascivious battery on a victim aged 12 to 16 by a person over the age of 18, a second-degree felony that carries a possible prison term of 15 years per count.

The case has generated a good bit of Internet buzz for understandable reasons. There’s sex involved — and underage, lesbian sex at that — along with loud cries of injustice from the family of Kaitlyn Hunt.

Whether or not the charges are fueled by homophobia, of course, is difficult to prove. That may be why gay rights organizations are keeping their distance. In what appears to…

Off the coast of Nigeria tugboat sank to a citizen of Ukraine on board

As we learned yesterday, 30 kilometers from the coast of Nigeria in the oil field Chevron tug sank Jascon-4, IMO 9316256, flag of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Tug supported the loading tanker mooring at number three barrels. The tug was owned by the company «West African Ventures Limited». The representatives of the shipowner confirmed flooding their tug. According to preliminary information, the cause of the flooding were bad weather conditions.

On board were 16 crew members. At the moment, they are all missing. According to information available to us in tow as a senior mechanic working citizen of Ukraine.

Currently on the site of the tragedy are continuing search operations. Nigeria has mobilized emergency services navy and air force to search for the ship’s crew Jascon-4.

Representatives of the owner, the company «West African Ventures Limited», confirmed the ship wreck Jascon-4, but more abstain from any official statements until the end of exploration and investigation of the accident.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine informed about the incident, but has so far refrained from making any official statements.” – seafarersjournal.com

Terror on the high seas: Devastating fire breaks out on Royal Caribbean cruise ship carrying over 2,000 passengers.A fire broke out aboard a Royal Caribbean ship on Monday morning but was extinguished about two hours later with no injuries reported The Grandeur of the Seas, which left Baltimore on Friday, never lost power and was able to sail into port in Freeport, Bahamas, on Monday afternoon The company said the more than 2,200 passengers will be flown from the Bahamas back to Baltimore where the trip began Royal Caribbean said all guests and 796 crew were safe and accounted for

A huge fire broke out on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship last night forcing the two thousand passengers to abandon their rooms on board and prepare to get into life boats.

The Grandeur of the Seas was forced to return to port this morning after the rear of the ship caught fire sending smoke into several hallways and keeping several passengers in assembly stations for over four hours.

Monday afternoon Royal Caribbean made the startling announcement that that they were reversing a prior decision and cancelling the Grandeur of the Seas cruise when it was determined it could no longer safely take passengers to the Bahamas, its intended destination.

Passenger Bang Warren was one of those passengers who had to evacuate her room as a warning horn blared over the sound system.

She described the scene chaotic to The Baltimore Sun, saying, ‘A lot of people were passing out with fear.’

Bang also said she saw crew members distributing oxygen masks and life vests. She also says that, ‘I know some children were vomiting.’

Photos of the ship emerged on social media showing that the entire rear of the ship was charred and destroyed.

Royal Caribbean announced that the 2,224 passengers would be receiving a full refund and a gift certificate from the company.

Another passenger, Danielle Miller, 23, said that she was sound asleep and was unaware of anything untoward until the ship’s intercom asked passengers to put life jackets on.

‘My first thought was that we were sinking,’ said Danielle of her terror.

‘I opened the door and just see people running around with life jackets on and we were being yelled at to get our life jackets on and run up to a deck that was two floors above us,’ she told ABC News.

‘But we didn’t know what was going on because when we were going to bed it was really stormy, so we honestly thought the boat might have been sinking. And we were just panicking and running upstairs.

‘And we didn’t know for about a half hour that there was a fire two decks below where we were at.’

Miller revealed she was so nervous as the fire raged that her hands were shaking and her heart was pounding.

‘A couple people fainted. People were throwing up, crying. Just anxiety attacks everywhere. I was just telling my roommate stay calm,’ she said.

A fire that broke out aboard a Royal Caribbean ship Monday did enough damage that the rest of the cruise was canceled and the company said the more than 2,200 passengers will be flown from the Bahamas back to Baltimore where the trip began.
The fire that began at 2:50 a.m. Monday was extinguished about two hours later with no injuries reported. A cause wasn’t immediately known. The Grandeur of the Seas, which left Baltimore on Friday, never lost power and was able to sail into port in Freeport, Bahamas, Monday afternoon. It had been planned to be a seven-night cruise.
Royal Caribbean said on its website and through social media that executives met with passengers in port and that the cruise line is arranging flights for all 2,224 guests on Tuesday. It said passengers will receive a full refund of their fare and a certificate for a future cruise.

Malaysia: Overloaded express boat carrying 204 capsizes in Sarawak, 181 rescued, 23 missing – 280513 1130z

An express boat, said to be overloaded with more than 100 passengers returning to their villages for the Gawai festival, capsized in the Rajang River at about 9am on Tuesday near Belaga town.

The boat was travelling from Bakun to Kapit and Sibu. Belaga assemblyman Liwan Lagang had spotted the overturned vessel and people swimming away from it towards the riverbank when he was flying by helicopter to Kuching.

He immediately landed at Uma Tevok Long Buyun where he met the survivors and organised a rescue. He said it was not immediately known if there were any fatalities and what had caused the boat to capsize. “We haven’t done a head count. “But according to those who swam to safety, there are people trapped in the boat,” Liwan said when contacted.

Overloaded express boat capsizes in Sarawak, 20 missing

BELAGA: Rescuers have saved 181 passengers from capsized express boat but 23 people are still missing in the capsized express boat incident in Sungai Rajang, Sarawak this morning.

The Kawan Mas express boat carrying holidaymakers returning home to celebrate the Gawai Dayak festival this weekend, capsized near Tanjong Giam Bungan at 9am, which is an hour boat ride from Belaga.

It is learnt the boat which started off from Bakun, was carrying 204 passengers although its maximum load capacity is only 74 people.

Belaga town councillor Daniel Levoh said none of the passengers in the overloaded express boat were from Belaga as the boat was already full with passengers before reaching the small town.

“None of those from Belaga managed to get a place on the boat. It could only berth to drop a few passengers off,” said Daniel.

He also said many of the passengers on the boat were workers from Bakun, Murum or Sungai Asap who were heading back for the Gawai Dayak celebrations this weekend.

Residents from nearby longhouses, Uma Tevok and Uma Tanjong were the first to to the scene torescue the passengers.

Culture and Heritage assistant minister Liwan Lagang, who was at the scene, said the boat was already overloaded as it was making its way towards Kapit.

Other rescue teams from the Fire an d Rescue Department, civil defence, police and Sarawak Rivers Board are now at the scene.

Meanwhile, Bernama quoted Belaga OCPD DSP Bakar Sebau who said the survivors were now sheltering at two longhouses not far from the site of the incident.

“We are still continuing with our search for those missing,” he said when contacted.

He said the express boat was travelling from Bakun in the upper part of the river and had developed engine problem after hitting wood debris in the river.

“TWENTY-THREE people are missing in remote Borneo after a boat overloaded with holidaymakers heading home for a festival capsized in treacherous rapids on a jungle river, Malaysian police said.

“Twenty-three people are still missing,” local police chief Bakar Anak Sebau told AFP.

He said 181 were rescued after the morning accident on the Rajang river, Malaysia’s longest, which flows from deep in the rugged interior of Borneo island in the state of Sarawak.

The boat’s capacity was just 74 passengers, added Bakar, police chief of the town of Belaga from where the boat set off shortly before the incident.

Most passengers were believed to be heading home for the coming weekend’s Gawai festival, a major cultural and religious observance for indigenous Borneo tribes that triggers heavy travel in the state.

Bakar said no deaths have so far been confirmed.

He said the boat was heading downstream and was believed to have struck a rock while navigating one of many sections of rapids on the 560-kilometre waterway.

The accident happened deep in the wild and sparsely populated interior of Sarawak, one of two Malaysian states located on Borneo. Sarawak is Malaysia’s largest state by area but also one of its least developed.

Gawai is one of the most important festivals celebrated each year by Borneo’s dozens of indigenous tribes and other ethnic groups, with thousands travelling to meet family and friends for the festival.” – theaustralian.com.au

The smaller rock, or “calf”, is estimated to weigh about a thousand tonnes and to have fallen away from the rock face at some point in the last 10,000 years. Another area we are still watching is a active low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal near Bangladesh. Moisture inflow from this area will continue to bring heavy rain through Thursday but thankfully it will weaken off by the weekend.  Along with the low there is a continued and serious risk of flooding in coastal areas.  On the other hand it is setting the stage for the southwest monsoon to start in India so will be cooling temperatures off for you.

(Photo: wikimedia.org / Ingo Mehling) Courtown Harbour (17 August 2010)

“A man drowned on Saturday afternoon after coming to the aid of three teenagers who got into difficulties while swimming in the harbour at Courtown Co Wexford.

The dead man has been identified as 39-year-old James OReilly from Cabra in Dublin. He had travelled to the resort town with a group of school children who were to take part in a football match over the weekend.

The incident occurred shortly before 1pm when a group of three 14-year-olds, including the son of Mr OReilly, went for a swim off the end of the pier.

They got into difficulty in strong currents and were being swept out to sea when the victim went to their assistance.

Although the day was warm, the water was said to be freezing and in the strong currents all four got into difficulty.

Members of the Courtown RNLI Lifeboat ( )volunteer crew were sitting an exam in a boathouse nearby and the lifeboat was immediately launched and was at the scene within minutes.

When it got there it was met by a Courtown Sailing Club dinghy rescue boat and the Courtown Sea Safari charter boat and the swimmers were pulled from the water.

The man was transferred to the Lifeboat where attempts at resuscitation began. The lifeboat docked and a local doctor assisted the crew until an ambulance arrived.

The man was pronounced dead on scene and taken to Waterford Regional Hospital where a post mortem was set to take place.

The teenagers were treated for hypothermia and shock but did not suffer any serious injury.” – irishtimes

The St Helier and St Catherine’s lifeboats were both called to assist with a man who had been injured during an incident at the Ecrehous

The St Catherine’s lifeboat was launched just after 4pm to give an initial on-scene assessment and provide any necessary first aid. The St Helier all-weather lifeboat followed with a paramedic and police officers. The casualty was transferred from the Ecrehous onto the St Helier lifeboat and then on to St Helier where an ambulance was waiting.

(Photo: channelonline.tv)

Nigel Sweeny, Lifeboat Operations Manager for St Catherine’s lifeboat station, commented: “The operation showed the different operational capabilities of the two types of lifeboat which we have in Jersey. The inshore lifeboat was quickly able to attend to the casualty and the crew could then make sure that his condition did not deteriorate; the St Helier all weather lifeboat was then able to bring paramedics and police officers onto the scene and return the casualty safely to Jersey. We are pleased that the casualty was not more seriously injured but head injuries do need to be treated with the utmost caution.”

Both lifeboats then returned to their stations where they were refuelled and prepared for their next service.

At 9:30pm on Saturday, the coastguard rescue helicopter from Stornoway was sent to rescue a lady who had collapsed and was struggling to remain conscious on the Isle of Rhum.

Unfortunately, when the rescue helicopter reached the island, the weather had closed in and the cloud cover was too low to fly in to locate the casualty. The Rhum Coastguard Rescue Team started to walk in to the ladys position while the rescue helicopter returned to Skye to refuel and to collect the Portree Coastguard Rescue Team to help with the evacuation of the lady.

Rhum and Portree Coastguards made their way to the injured lady on foot and found her conscious but very cold and unable to walk. They made her comfortable and placed her in a stretcher ready for extraction. Carrying the stretcher through Harris Glen towards the coast, they were able to get the lady to a location suitable for the rescue helicopter to fly to meet them as the weather lifted. The casualty was then transported to Hospital in Broadford.

The coastguard rescue helicopter from Stornoway had already been to four different incidents involving injured walkers on Saturday in Skye, Kintail and Crianlarich.

Carol Collins, Stornoway Coastguard Watch Manager says,

With so many people enjoying a chance to get out walking over the bank holiday weekend our advice for walkers is to be prepared. Make sure you are properly equipped for walking along coastal paths. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and check the weather forecast before you set out. Do not attempt to climb up or down cliffs unless you are properly equipped and trained. Do not try to climb cliffs as a short cut back to the top. Do not attempt self rescue, if you get into difficulty, call 999 and ask for the coastguard.

Russia: Gay Rights Activists Arrested At Rally

Protesters are arrested after taking to Moscow’s streets following the murder of a Russian man for being gay.

“Activists defied Russian authorities by holding a gay pride march in Moscow. Officials promised any action would be “thwarted” and made dozens of arrests as protesters gathered outside the Russian Parliament.

Dozens of activists at a gay pride march in Moscow have been arrested by Russian police.

Authorities said at least 30 gay rights campaigners were being held after defying a ban on the protest.

City officials had promised the march would be “thwarted” and that protesters faced being arrested and fined.

But activists ignored the threats and unfurled banners denouncing the Kremlin-backed homophobic legislation in front of Russia’s lower house of parliament.

As police made arrests, some protesters were attacked by Orthodox Christian vigilantes carrying icons and crosses.

The action came after the torture and murder of a young man in Volgograd focused attention on the issue of homophobia in Russia and what human rights groups claim is an increasingly dangerous situation.

Vladislav Tornovoi found dead

Vladislav Tornovoi, 22, was found dead earlier this month in a children’s playground outside the block of flats where he grew up.

He had been stripped, abused (G: raped) with beer bottles, and beaten with a concrete block. His killers then tried to set his body on fire.

The two men arrested for his murder were his friends, one of them has known him since childhood. They had been drinking together that night.

Investigators say one of the men confessed that they had killed him because he told them he was gay.

A police video shows one of the suspects being brought back to the scene and asked to demonstrate, using a mannequin, how he attacked his friend.

When a detective asks him why, he replies: “Because he said he was a fag”.

Mr Tornovoi’s father Andrei told Sky News he had to bury his son in a closed casket – that his injuries were so severe the doctors advised him against viewing his body.

The post-mortem recorded the cause of death as blunt trauma to the head, but also noted serious internal injuries and genital mutilation.

But he refuses to believe his son could possibly have been gay – to suggest otherwise, he told us, dishonours his memory.

“It was a shock when his friends and relatives heard that he was gay. What are you talking about, how can he be gay? He was living a normal life,” he said.

Some of Mr Vladislav’s friends have also insisted that he could not have been gay, that his killers invented his drunken confession to try to justify what they had done, and elicit public sympathy.

One of his former classmates said the suspects have been congratulated on various blogs and Russian websites.

Nearly 50 passengers, including children, have been rescued from a boat after it struck a rock and started taking in water off Pembrokeshire.

The Lady Helen had been sailing from Martin’s Haven to nearby Skomer Island.

A mayday was sent out and a number of other boats went to its rescue, including its sister boat, the Dale Princess.

Milford Haven coastguard said all 48 passengers were “safely ashore with no injuries”.

Boat trips are popular to Skomer, a wildlife sanctuary and home to colonies of thousands of sea birds just off the Pembrokeshire coast.

Diver Dr Pauline Smith picked up passengers on her friend’s boat, Over Dale.

“We were a group of divers who were on our way out and a mayday call was put out,” said Dr Smith.

“The Lady Helen was going from Martin’s Haven to Skomer and it had run aground on some rocks between the island.

“A number of boats had to go to its rescue.

Everyone has done an excellent job carrying out this rescue, including all the various vessels that responded Barrie Yelland Milford Haven Coastguard

“Between them, the boats disembarked 40 passengers.”

The sister boat, the Dale Princess, managed to drag the sinking Lady Helen off the rocks and began pulling her gently further ashore.

The RNLI and police boats are also in attendance.

Dr Smith, a GP from Pembrokeshire, said: “We had quite a few children and elderly ladies on our boat. The children were initially a bit scared. They said the boat had been listing. But once we gave them a Twix each they were fine.”

Milford Haven coastguard said the alert was raised at 12.55 BST when the Lady Helen issued a mayday alert.

The boat had struck a rock in Little Sound, between Martin’s Haven and Skomer Island.

It became stuck and began taking on water when she was pulled free by another boat.

“We can report that all 48 passengers are now safely ashore with no injuries,” said Milford Haven Coastguard watch manager Barrie Yelland.

“The vessel has now been beached at a place called Martin’s Haven and there are three salvage pumps on board and she is being pulled further up the shore.

“Everyone has done an excellent job carrying out this rescue, including all the various vessels that responded.”

The RNLI lifeboats from Angle and St David’s were involved, along with a Dyfed-Powys Police rib and an RAF helicopter from Chivenor in Devon.

“Special thanks must also go out to the boat Over Dale,” said the watch manager.

At 17h03 on Friday the 24th of May Hout Bay volunteers were called out by the Transnet National Ports Authority to assist a small fishing boat, with 3 local Hout Bay fishermen onboard, lost in dense fog and believed to be in the vicinity of Cape Point.

Lyall Pringle, NSRI Hout Bay station commander, said: Our duty crew launched NADINE GORDIMER and ALBIE MATTHEWS and a search commenced in dense fog for the boat. The three fishermen had only a vague idea of where they could be based on their estimated compass direction that they had travelled from Hout Bay and the length of time and speed that they had been underway.

The fishermen had run out of fuel and were adrift in 35 meters depth of water with only a 25 meter length anchor chain so the usual procedure of getting them to put to anchor and wait for the fog to lift was not an option.

Based on the information available we narrowed down the search area to between the shoreline and 3 nautical miles out to sea, between Kommetjie and Cape Point. While searching in this area we found the fishermen at approximately 22h00 just over 3 nautical miles off Soetwater (between Kommetjie and Cape Point). A tow-line was rigged and we towed them safely to Hout Bay harbour, arriving just after midnight.

NSRI are urging boaters to carry all safety equipment required including GPS (Global Positioning System) device and to check weather forecasts before launching particularly on the West Coast which sees dense fog conditions regularly during winter months.

Pakistan: At least 16 children and 1 teacher burned to death, 7 injured, after gas cylinder exploded on school bus – 250513 1105z

At least 17 children have been burned to death after a gas cylinder exploded on their school bus in eastern Pakistan, police have said.

At least seven more children were taken to hospital after the blast, which caused the bus to catch fire.

The incident took place on the outskirts of the city of Gujrat. Local media quoted the police as saying the driver had survived the explosion. Gujrat is about 200km (120 miles) south-east of the capital Islamabad. Compressed natural gas is used in millions of vehicles in Pakistan as a cheaper alternative to diesel and petrol. Numerous previous vehicle explosions have been blamed on substandard cylinders used to contain the fuel.

The van was carrying children to a private school when it caught fire, local police chief Dar Ali Khattak told AFP.

“The fire erupted in the vehicle when the children were only a few kilometres from their school,” he said.

The blaze was apparently caused by a spark when the driver of the dual-fuel van switched from gas to petrol, he said, adding that the fuel gas cylinder was intact.

Spring on track to be coldest for 30 years

Official blog of the Met Office news team

Early figures from the Met Office show spring (March, April and May) 2013 is on course to be the coldest in the UK since 1979.

Estimates of the mean temperature for the whole season have been made based on data from 1 March up to 15 May as well as an assumption of average conditions through to the end of this month. The final figures could therefore be different, depending on the temperatures we actually see up to the end of May.

The estimates suggest the mean UK temperature for spring will be around 6.1 °C, which would make it the 6th coldest spring in national records dating back to 1910 and the coldest since 1979 when the mean temperature was 6.0 °C.

The estimated figure this year goes against recent form for spring, with eight of the past ten years being above the long-term (1981-2010) average for the season…

A major hurricane, designated as Category 3 or greater, packs winds of well over 100 mph.

In addition, forecasters predicted a below-normal…
