Iceland: Hekla volcano could be ready for another eruption, measurements suggest – Published 30 Mar 2017 1730z (GMT/UTC)

Mount Hekla

“Most measurements that we have today indicate that Hekla is ready for an eruption, but we do not know what factor will set the eruption off,” says geophysicist Pall Einarsson at the University of Iceland. More pressure is in the magma chambers underneath the mountain than before the last two eruptions in 1991 and 2000. It’s however impossible to say whether a Hekla eruption is to be expected soon or not, as eruptions come without much warning and with little correlation to other volcanic or earthquake activities in South Iceland. Today marks the 70th anniversary of the greatest Hekla eruption known to man, which lasted 13 months. There have been five eruptions in Mount Hekla since 1970.

“1991

On January 17th Helka violently erupted with a cloud of ash and tephra that reached an altitude of 39,360 ft. (12 km). During this eruption a summit fissure and a main crater were created and from these lava flows extended down the southeastern and northwestern slopes. Lava fountains in these craters reached a height of 984 ft. (300m). This eruption continued until March 11th when activity once again died down”. – volcano.oregonstate.edu

“2000

A lava field on Hekla in July 2000

The most recent eruption was relatively short, it started at 18:18 on 26 February 2000 and lasted until 8 March. It was a VEI3 eruption producing a lava volume of 0.189 km3 DRE[38] / 0.29 km3[12] and 107 m3 of tephra.[12] The eruption went through four phases:

  1. initial explosive stage
  2. fire fountains
  3. bursts of Strombolian eruption
  4. effusion of lava[38]

Eruption activity was at a maximum in the first hour and by the first night the fissure on Hekla had opened to a length of 6–7 km. The steam column rose to a height of almost 15 km and ash was transported to Grímsey.[39] During this eruption, a NASA DC-8 aeroplane accidentally flew through the plume with all instruments switched on, resulting in unprecedented measurement of a young volcanic plume.[40]

Up until this eruption, it had always been assumed that Hekla was incapable of producing the most dangerous of volcanic phenomena, the pyroclastic flow. In January 2003, however, a team from the Norvol Institute in Reykjavík, under the leadership of Dr. Ármann Höskuldsson, reported that they found traces of a pyroclastic flow, roughly 5 km long, stretching down the side of the mountain. This will call for a reappraisal of volcanic eruptions of the basic rock type, which up to now were generally thought not to produce large pyroclastic flows. It will also require that the public and curious spectators who always rush to the scene at the start of a new outbreak, be kept much further away from the volcanic activity than was thought necessary during previous outbreaks.

Future eruptions

Steam at the summit of Hekla

In January 2010 there were reports of patches near to the summit not covered with snow[41] and that the lava chamber pressure had reached levels similar to those before Hekla last erupted[42] however no eruption subsequently occurred.

International media reported activity that is interpreted as being close to another eruption in July 2011[43] while Icelandic news sources claimed otherwise.[44] The Icelandic state news web site, ruv.is, regularly warns travellers of imminent eruptions.[45][46][47]

In March 2013 a Civil Protection State of Uncertainty was issued due to an unusual cluster of seven micro-earthquakes at a depth of approximately 11 km, to the NE of the volcano, although there were no signs of ground deformation.[48] People were warned against travelling to the mountain, and the air traffic surveillance level was increased to yellow temporarily.[49][50] In April the volcano underwent unusual rapid inflation, particularly in the northern region of the volcano, that some commentators regarded as making an imminent eruption more likely.[51][52]”

Residents have fled villages near Peru’s Ubinas volcano, which this week began spitting out white hot chunks of rock, some as big as 30 centimeters (one foot) in diameter.

Domingo Ramos, a scientist from Peru’s mining institute, said the volcano reawakened several days ago. The renewed activity led the government to announce a state of emergency in the Andean region of Moquegua, some 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) south of Lima.

The region is home to some 40 volcanoes, most of which, unlike Ubinas, are dormant. Officials plan to distribute food, face masks and goggles to help those upwind of the volcano cope with airborne ash.

Mount Sinabung Volcano N 3 10.267, E 98 23.417

A volcano in western Indonesia erupted on Thursday, unleashing a column of dark volcanic material high into the air weeks after villagers were returning home from an earlier eruption, officials said.

The explosion at Mount Sinabung, located in North Sumatra province, shot black ash 3 kilometers (nearly 2 miles) into the air, but there were no reports of injuries or damage, said National Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. He said villages, farms and trees around the 2,600-meter (8,530-foot) -high rumbling volcano were covered in thick gray ash, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 3,300 people. Most were from two villages within 3 kilometers (nearly 2 miles) of the mountain in Karo district. No lava or debris spewed from the volcano, and nearby towns and villages were not in danger, but authorities warned tourists to stay away from the danger zone located 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the crater, Nugroho said. Last month, more than 15,000 people were forced to flee when the volcano rumbled to life after being dormant for three years, belching ash and smoke and igniting fires on its slopes. The volcano’s last major eruption in August 2010 killed two people and forced 30,000 others to flee. It caught many scientists off guard because it had been quiet for four centuries. Mount Sinabung is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

Ubinas Volcano S 16 21.300, W 70 54.180

The Peruvian Geophysics Institute (IGP) reports that Ubinas Volcano in Moquegua has once again shown signs of activity.

In early September, Ubinas registered a number of small explosions that initially cause alarm in the local population. However, as a column of potentially dangerous silica ash rose as high as two kilometers into the sky, authorities were forced to declare a State of Emergency in the area. The volcano had been quiet for several weeks, but now it has once again released smoke and ash into the air. Andina news agency reports that the incident occurred on the afternoon of Oct. 22, and lasted approximately two minutes. Equipment used by IGP scientists registered movement inside of the volcano before it released the cloud of smoke and ash. However, the incident is not being described as an eruption, because it lacked the explosive force necessary to categorize it as such. Andina reports that Ubinas Volcano is the most active volcano in Peru, having registered 24 eruptions over five centuries. Prior to the explosions in early September, the volcano had been dormant since 2009. The silica ash released by the volcano in September caused locals to experience medical problems such as headaches, stomach pain, and vomiting.

Zhupanovsky Volcano N 53 35.300, E 159 8.900

A new explosive eruption started yesterday night (23 Oct). An ash plume was detected drifting at an estimated 16,000 ft (5 km) altitude and drifting ESE.

At least 1 mm of ash have been deposited in the Nalychevo valley, a natural park between Zhupanovsky and Avachinsky volcanoes. Zhupanovsky volcano lies about 70 km northeast of the capital of Kamchatka, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and had its last eruption in 1959. It is a complex volcano composed of several overlapping cones aligned on a roughly east-west oriented axis. The new eruption comes from the same vent that has been also the site of all known historical eruptions, located west of the highest point of the volcanic massif.

Philippines: Mayon Volcano Eruption Kills 5, injures 7, 20+ others still trapped – 070513 0710z

One of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes spewed huge rocks and ash early Tuesday after a 3-year calm, killing four climbers and trapping others near the crater, officials said.

Rescue teams were sent to Mayon volcano in the central Philippines to look for four climbers and guides trapped after the mild eruption, Albay provincial Gov. Joey Salceda said. Clouds have cleared over the volcano, which was quiet later in the morning.

The four climbers who died were struck by huge rocks, guide Kenneth Jesalva said from a camp near the crater. Another man was critically injured from a group of eight that included five foreigners and three Filipino guides. One of those killed was Filipino. The nationalities of the foreign climbers were not immediately clear. No bodies have been retrieved yet.

Jesalva said he was in the group that spent the night on the picturesque mountain, known for its almost-perfect cone, when the volcano rumbled back to life early in the morning and rocks “as big as a living room” came raining down on them. He rushed back to the base camp to call for help.

The head of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Renato Solidum, said Tuesday’s eruption was normal for the restive Mayon, about 340 kilometers (212 miles) southeast of Manila. It has erupted about 40 times during the last 400 years.

In 2010, thousands of residents moved to temporary shelters when the volcano ejected ash in an 8-kilometer (5-mile) zone surrounding the crater. Solidum said that no alert was raised for the volcano following the latest eruption and no evacuation was being planned. Climbers are not allowed when an alert is up, and the recent calm may have encouraged this week’s trek.

At least 5 climbers dead, 7 hurt as Mayon Volcano spews ash

May 7, 2013 10:40am

(Updated 12:28 p.m. local time) At least five climbers were killed while seven were injured when Mayon Volcano in Albay spewed ash Tuesday morning, officials said.

Four of the fatalities are foreigners, who were crushed by large rocks triggered by the ash explosion along with their Filipino tour guide, Albay Governor Joey Salceda said. GMA News Online is still verifying the nationalities of the four casualties.

He said two groups consisting of 27 hikers and their guides were on the mountain when the ash explosion occurred.

Of the seven people in the first group that used the Santa Maria route, three were injured, all of them Indonesians,Salceda told GMA News Online in a phone interview. Two were rescued while their two tourist guides stayed behind with the injured climbers, who are waiting for rescue, he added.
The fatalities came from the second groupwho used the Malilipot route going up the volcano and consisted of 20 people, he said.
“Nawalan na kami ng contact from the second group kaya hindi namin ma-ascertain kung ano na ang kalagayan ng 15 pang iba,” Salceda said. “Nagpadala na kami ng chopper.”

A rescue team is on its way up the volcano as the hikers cannot go down on their own following the new volcanic hazards.

Nang nagkaroon ng eruption, sila ang malapit sa crater, National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) head Eduardo del Rosario said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Del Rosario also told GMA News TV’s News to Go program that three separate groups with an estimated 20 mountain climbers are still stuck near the crater of the volcano.Despite the recorded casualties from the volcanic ash explosion, the alert level for Mount Mayon was not raised, he said.

As per alert status being maintained by Phivolcs, it is still maintaining alert level 0, meaning that no eruption is imminent, del Rosario said.

Observe the permanent danger zones where the public will be prohibited from entering the six-kilometer radius [of the zone], he said.

Hikers may have suffocated

Earlier, Albay-based radioman Lito Sanchez quoted a local tourist guide, Kenneth Jesalva, as saying a foreigner and a local tourist may have suffocated after being caught near the explosion.
“Siya mismo nagkumpirma, dalawang kasama umakyat sa slope ng Mayon ang sinasabing casualty. Isang foreign tourist at isang local tourist. Ayon sa kanyang pagkasabi ay patay na,” he said in an interview on dzBB.
Albay Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council head Cedric Daep said they had received “unconfirmed” reports that some people had climbed the volcano.
Phivolcs said the phreatic (steam-driven) explosion occurred at 8 a.m., with the steam reaching 500 meters above the summit and drifting east.

It added Alert Level 0 (normal situation) remains in effect.

Unauthorized climb

Daep said Salceda has dispatched three teams near Mount Mayon to assist those who may be trying to return from the volcano.
Salceda said the mountain climbing activities of the two groups affected were unauthorized. He added the tourist guides failed to secure a permit from the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO) and the Department of Tourism.
“Matagal na naming sinasabihan ang mga tour guide na every time you climb the volcano, kailangan munang mag-ask ng permission,” he said. “Bawal kasing maraming sabay-sabay na aakyat.”

“Huge demand kasi ngayon ang pag-akyat, lalo na sa foreigners,” he added.

Authorities are facing difficulties in accounting for all the victims because the tourist guides of the groups that went up the volcano failed to seek permits for the climb.

“So far wala kaming issued permit to climbers,” Daep confirmed, adding that some tourists and orchid collectors may have gone there despite lack of permission.

“Hindi namin alam kung ilan o sino ang umakyat kasi wala silang clearance from APSEMO,” Daep said in a separate telephone interview with GMA News Online.
For now, Daep said Salceda ordered local teams to make sure the six-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone is cleared of climbers.

“All other activities (in the area) are suspended,” he said.

Not the worst

Mayon Volcano’s May 7 phreatic eruption is the latest in its 390-year recorded history, Phivolcs said Tuesday.
Phivolcs said that the “most destructive eruption” of Mayon on record was on Feb. 1, 1814, when it erupted with “plinian, pyroclastic flows” and “volcanic lightning and lahar.”
Mayon is listed among at least 23 active volcanoes in the Philippines, along with Mounts Pinatubo (Central Luzon) and Taal (Batangas), Phivolcs said. With reports from Andrei Medina and Amanda Fernandez/KG/HS/RSJ/YA, GMA News”

Popocatepetl Volcano on 24/11/2011

“Popocatpetl, the nearly 18,000 foot volcano that hovers like a sentinel on the southeastern fringe of Mexico’s capital, awakened again Sunday, punctuating an especially shaky seismic season. Popo, as the mountain is widely called, spewed at least seven exhalations overnight Saturday and through the day Sunday, sending vapor, smoke and gas billowing into the clear sky.

The most serious occurred just after 9 a.m. Sunday, sending a vapor cloud a mile into the air.

Mexico’s National Disaster Prevention Center issued a precautionary warning to residents, advising them to stay alert for a worsening situation and to keep at least seven miles away from the volcano’s crater.

The service predicted continuing “moderate exhalations, some with ash, sporadic low to moderate explosions with likely burning fragments emitted close to the crater, and flaming magma within the crater visible at night.” Popo’s latest fuming comes amid a series of earthquakes striking southern and central Mexico in the past three weeks. Several 6 magnitude quakes struck Wednesday, but no damage. A midday 7.4 quake on March 20 damaged hundreds of buildings in Oaxaca and Guerrero states and sent hundreds of thousands of residents scrambling into Mexico City’s streets.

The volcano, whose full name means Smoking Mountain in the Nahuatl tongue of the Aztecs, is a fairly active volcano, with such exhalations occurring regularly. Events like Sunday’s serve to prevent more dangerous pressure from building inside the volcano, scientists say.

Popo experienced similar moderate activity several times in 2011 and again at the beginning of this year. Though more than 40 miles from downtown Mexico City , Popo and its adjoining snow-capped sister mountain, Iztaccihuatl dominate the Valley of Mexico and the surrounding highlands, home to some 25 million people. Mexico City’s teeming working class suburbs now lick at the mountains’ base. The city of Puebla, home to 1 million people, stands a few dozen miles from the volcano eastern slopes.

Aztec legend held that Popocatepetl was a warrior deeply in love with Izta, whose silhouette can resemble a sleeping woman from the right angles. Sent by her father to battle to prove his worth, Popo was falsely reported killed. Iztaccihuatl died grief-stricken. When he returned from battle, Popo hunched next to her body, bowed his head and died of heartbreak.”

Europe’s highest active volcano, Italy’s Mount Etna, erupted again on Thursday

Europe’s highest active volcano, Italy’s Mount Etna, erupted again on Thursday.

The eruption – which spewed blood-red molten lava and grey and white ash into the air – is the 24th in a series that started in January 2011. The Sicilian volcano has erupted three times in the past month, with regular 12 day pauses.

The main eruption is located at the south-eastern crater, not far from Zafferana Etnea village, but so far Italian authorities have not issued any warning of danger to houses and people. The south-eastern crater, born in 1971, has been the most active in recent years. In the recent past, lava flows have mainly damaged properties, but due to its slow speed the lava has not killed anyone. Heavy ash emissions sometimes force the closure of nearby Catania International Airport. For now, the airport remains open. Mount Etna, has erupted for the fifth time this year. Hot lava and ash spewed from the top into a valley nearby on the Italian island of Sicily.

The eruption happened on Sunday morning at 4am local time for more than an hour and a half. Although the area around the volcano was covered by ash, it didn’t affect planes travelling near it. Air traffic can be seriously affected when ash from volcanic eruptions is in the air.

In 2010, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland erupted and flights in Europe and across the Atlantic were cancelled because the ash particles in the air made it unsafe to fly.

Only 500 people have been to space, only three people have been to the bottom of the ocean, but no one has ever attempted to journey to the core of an active volcano. Until now.

Using patented carbon-carbon materials pioneered for deep space exploration, Virgin is proud to announce a revolutionary new vehicle, VVS1, which will be capable of plunging three people into the molten lava core of an active volcano.

In its first three years of operation, Virgin Volcanic‘s VVS1 will target the five most active volcanoes in the world:

•    Etna – Sicily, Italy
•    Stromboli – Aeolian Islands
•    Yasur – Republic of Vanuatu
•    Ambrym – Republic of Vanuatu
•    Tinakula – Solomon Islands

Sir Richard Branson will go on the first expedition along with Tom Hanks, Academy Award winning actor and star of Joe Versus the Volcano; Black Eyed Peas recording artist and science enthusiast Will.i.am; actor/producer Seth Green; and two-time Academy Award winning documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple.

Virgin registered Virgin Volcanic in the late 1990s in anticipation of the development of technology to explore active volcanoes.

Sir Richard said: “I have a long held a fascination with volcanoes having read Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth as a young boy. I decided that one day I would go there too. Alongside our adventures with Virgin Galactic and Virgin Oceanic, volcanoes are the next great unexplored terrain. What can I say, I lava challenge!”

Tom Hanks said: “A window seat for a journey to the liquid core of our home planet would be a bargain at twice the price.”

Documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple has closed a deal with Virgin Produced to direct a documentary around the Virgin Volcanic project utilising groundbreaking 3D technology called VD. Additionally, recording artist (and passenger) Will.i.am plans to record the first volcanic soundtrack for the film, recorded entirely inside a live active volcano. The soundtrack will be released in conjunction with the documentary.

Volcanologist Frederick Smith, based in the Republic of Vanuatu currently conducting preliminary tests on Yasur, added: “The project will derive important scientific results to help control and monitor active volcanoes. It is believed a new level of the Volcanic Explosivity Index could be found above and beyond the current high of Level 8 – Supervolcanic.”

The team behind Virgin Volcanic believes going to the core of the five most active volcanoes is just the first step. In future this technology can be developed as a clean, safe and fast alternative to trans- continental commercial aviation. By taking the heat from molten lava Virgin Volcanic plans to develop a totally renewable energy source to power the VVS1. It is seen as a way to literally fulfill Richard Branson’s philosophy of screwing business as usual. This would involve going through the Earth rather than round it. Experts predict that one could travel from Hawaii to Naples in a couple of hours via the molten lava flows, with passengers boarding and disembarking from a network of “Earthports” close to the world’s volcanoes.

Seth Green is among a long list of Early Volcanauts, including Arnold Schwarzenegger and Stephen Hawking, who have put down the $1m deposit to reserve an early seat. Seth Green commented: “Ever since filming Austin Powers, I’ve had this obsession with underground layers. Ive waited patiently for Sir Richard to make the dream of traveling to the Earth’s core a reality.”
