Severe Tropical Cyclone Ernie (Category 5) was located at 2:00 am AWST near
15.9S 110.4E,
that is 790 km southeast of Christmas Island [and 780 km north northwest of
Exmouth] and moving south at 6 kilometres per hour.

Severe Tropical Cyclone Ernie has continued to intensify over the last 6 hours
and is a category 5 system over open waters northwest of WA. Ernie will
continue to intensify as it slowly tracks towards the south and then turn to
the west-southwest this morning and is expected to begin weakening from late
Saturday or early Sunday.

Gales are not expected on Christmas Island or the WA mainland.

The next Information Bulletin will be issued at 9 am AWST.

Java Sea: AirAsia flight QZ8501 from Indonesia to Singapore – Two big objects found. Total bodies recovered is 30. – Updated 030115 0710z (GMT/UTC)

PANGKALAN BUN/JAKARTA – Two big objects were found in the search for Indonesia AirAsia flight QZ8501 on Saturday, as indonesia’s transport ministry said the plane was flying on an unauthorised schedule when it disappeared.

The airline was not permitted to fly the Surabaya-Singapore route on Sundays and had not asked to change its schedule.

Meantime, the two objects spotted on Saturday are about 30 metres under water and located near an oil slick spotted on Friday, said Mr Bambang Soelistyo, chief of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency Basarnas. The larger of the objects was around 10m by 5m.

“With the discovery of an oil spill and two big parts of the aircraft, I can assure you these are the parts of the AirAsia plane we have been looking for,” he said.

“We are lowering a ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) underwater to get an actual picture of the objects detected on the sea floor. All are at the depth of 30m,” Mr Soelistyo said, adding that a strong current was making it difficult to operate the ROV.

Three vessels sent out to a sea area where the oil slick was spotted located the “two objects…that are close to each other,” said Mr Soelistyo. One of the three vessels was Singapore’s Navy ship RSS Persistence, he added.

The transport ministry said on Friday night that the AirAsia plane was travelling at a flight time that had not been cleared by officials. It was not permitted to fly the Surabaya-Singapore route on Sundays.

“It violated the route permit given, the schedule given, that’s the problem,” director-general of air transport Djoko Murjatmodjo said.

He added that AirAsia’s permit for the route has been frozen until investigations are completed.

Sea conditions remain rough on Saturday

The sea in the search area was still rough on Saturday, with waves reaching a height of 4m.

Malaysia’s Chief of Navy Abdul Aziz Jaafar said in a tweet that visibility was about 8 nautical miles with wind speed of 20-30 knots. He said a search area with a dimension of 57 by 10 nautical miles had been established.

Small pieces of the aircraft and other debris have been found so far, but there has been no sign of the crucial voice and flight data recorders – the so-called black boxes that investigators hope will unravel the sequence of events in the cockpit during the doomed jet’s final minutes.

Indonesia said on Friday that recovery teams recovered 30 bodies, including some strapped in their seats, and spotted debris resembling parts of the tail.

The navy picked up at least five bodies wearing seat belts and found the debris by sonar, Colonel Yayan Sofiyan, commander of the warship Bung Tomo, told MetroTV.

“Our team found what we suspect is a fraction of the aircraft tail,” The colonel said on Friday. “It was at the bottom of the sea, at 29 meters deep.”

Oil spill was also found in the red zone which has been given priority in the search. The zone is close to Kumai Bay.

Of the 30 bodies recovered, four have been identified. Police said three Indonesians, including stewardess Khairunnisa Haidar, passengers Grayson Herbert Linaksita and Kevin Alexander Soetjipto, were identified based on their fingerprints and medical records.

International experts from France, Singapore and Indonesia equipped with sophisticated acoustic detection gear joined the teams at the suspected crash site off Borneo, bolstering the search for the Airbus A320-200’s black box flight recorders.

But strong wind and heavy seas hindered divers’ search for the fuselage of the plane, which went down on Sunday en route from Indonesia’s second-biggest city Surabaya to Singapore with 162 people on board. No survivors have been found.

The plane had gone missing on Dec 28, 2014, and debris were found three days later in the waters south of Kalimantan region.

Given that the plane crashed in shallow seas, experts say finding the boxes should not be difficult if the beacons, with a range of 2,000 to 3,000 metres, are working.

Toos Sanitiyoso, an air safety investigator with the National Committee for Transportation Safety, said he hoped the black box flight data and voice recorders could be found within a week, suggesting there was still doubt over the plane’s location.

“The main thing is to find the main area of the wreckage and then the black box,” he told reporters.  None of the tell-tale black box “pings” had been detected, he said.

Investigators are working on a theory that the plane went into a stall as it climbed steeply to avoid a storm about 40 minutes into the flight. Experts also said that initial information point ot the possibility that the aircraft may have managed to land on sea but could have been overcome by high seas, AFP reported.

Was the plane flying too slowly, too steeply?

The plane disappeared on Sunday morning after it failed to get permission to fly higher to avoid bad weather because of heavy air traffic. It was flying from Surabaya to Singapore with 162 people on board.

The plane was travelling at 32,000 feet and had asked to fly at 38,000 feet. When air traffic controllers granted permission for a rise to 34,000 feet a few minutes later, they received no response.

Radar data being examined by investigators appeared to show that the Airbus A320 made an “unbelievably” steep climb before it crashed, possibly pushing it beyond the aircraft’s limits, a source familiar with the probe’s initial findings said on Wednesday.

The data was transmitted before the aircraft disappeared from the screens of air traffic controllers in Jakarta on Sunday, added the source, who declined to be identified. “So far, the numbers taken by the radar are unbelievably high. This rate of climb is very high, too high. It appears to be beyond the performance envelope of the aircraft,” he said.

Online discussion among pilots has centred on unconfirmed secondary radar data from Malaysia that suggested the aircraft was climbing at a speed of 353 knots, about 100 knots too slow, and that it might have stalled.

Investigators are focusing initially on whether the crew took too long to request permission to climb, or could have ascended on their own initiative earlier, said a source close to the inquiry, adding that poor weather could have played a part as well.

A Qantas pilot with 25 years of experience flying in the region said the discovery of the debris field relatively close to the last known radar plot of the plane pointed to an aerodynamic stall. One possibility is that the plane’s instruments iced up, giving the pilots inaccurate readings.

The Indonesian captain, a former air force fighter pilot, had 6,100 flying hours under his belt and the plane last underwent maintenance in mid-November, said the airline, which is 49 per cent owned by Malaysia-based budget carrier AirAsia.

Did the aircraft manage to ditch?

The Airbus A320-200 had disappeared from radar over the Java Sea during a storm, but it failed to send the transmissions normally emitted when a plane crashes or is submerged.

Experts say this suggests the experienced former air force pilot, Captain Iriyanto, conducted an emergency water landing which did not have a destructive impact.

“The emergency locator transmitter (ELT) would work on impact, be that land, sea or the sides of a mountain, and my analysis is it didn’t work because there was no major impact during landing,” said Dudi Sudibyo, a senior editor of aviation magazine Angkasa.  “The pilot managed to land it on the sea’s surface,” he added.

“The conclusions I have come to so far are that the plane did not blow up mid-air, and it did not suffer an impact when it hit a surface, because if it did so then the bodies would not be intact,” Chappy Hakim, a former air force commander, told AFP.

The fuselage is also thought to be largely intact after aerial searchers saw a “shadow” on the seabed, where operations are now being focused.  An emergency exit door and an inflatable slide were among the first items recovered by the search team, suggesting the first passengers may have started the evacuation process once the plane landed on water.

Former transport minister Jusman Syafii Djamal was convinced the discovery of the floating exit door meant “someone had opened it”.  Passengers may have been waiting for a flight attendant to inflate a life raft when a high wave hit the nose and sank the plane, Djamal added.  “High waves may have hit the plane, the nose, and sunk the plane.”

Flight safety standards require that all passengers can be evacuated from a plane in 90 seconds.  The cause and more details of the crash will remain unclear until investigators find the all-important black boxes, which will answer questions such as why the underwater locator beacon did not work.

Three airline disasters involving Malaysian-affiliated carriers in less than a year have dented confidence in the country’s aviation industry and spooked travellers.

Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 went missing in March on a trip from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew and has not been found. On July 17, the same airline’s Flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board.

The group counts affiliates in Thailand, the Philippines and India, and had not suffered a crash since its Malaysian budget operations began in 2002.

At least 40 bodies and wreckage including a plane door and oxygen tanks have been recovered in the search for missing AirAsia Flight QZ8501.

The bodies – which were not wearing life jackets – have been brought on board a navy ship, said Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue Director SB Supriyadi.

“The warship Bung Tomo has retrieved 40 bodies and the number is growing. They are very busy now,” said a navy spokesman.

They were found in the Java Sea about six miles (10km) from where the plane last communicated with air traffic control.

Search chief SB Supriyadi also said an air force Hercules had “found an object described as a shadow at the bottom of the sea in the form of a plane”.

Objects spotted earlier have also been confirmed as wreckage from the plane and some have been taken away by helicopter for testing.

AirAsia boss Tony Fernandes said he was rushing to the scene and wrote on Twitter: “My heart is filled with sadness for all the families involved in QZ 8501.

“On behalf of AirAsia my condolences to all. Words cannot express how sorry I am.”

The Airbus A320-200 disappeared from radar on Sunday morning, on its way from Surabaya in Indonesia to Singapore.

There were 162 people on board, including one British man, Hull-born Chi Man Choi, and his two-year-old daughter.

The aircraft’s last request – to climb higher to avoid a storm – was turned down.

Minutes later it fell off the radar without giving any distress call.

Geoffrey Thomas, editor of AirlineRatings.com, told Sky News: “We have a radar plot which shows the plane actually climbing through 36,300ft – it wasn’t given permission to do that.

“It also shows that its speed had decayed by 134mph and dropped dramatically to a level where it couldn’t sustain flight.”

Some 30 ships and 21 aircraft from South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and Indonesia have been involved in searching 10,000 nautical miles of ocean.

JAKARTA: A landslide triggered by torrential downpours has killed at least 12 people and left nearly 100 others missing on Indonesia’s main island of Java, an official said Saturday.Hundreds of rescuers were digging through mud and rubble after the landslide buried scores of houses in Jemblung village in central Java late Friday, the national disaster agency said.

The landslide swept down a hillside in the village, sparing only two houses, an AFP correspondent said.

TV footage showed bystanders watching the emergency effort while rescuers passed an orange body bag by hand through the muddy area.

“We found 12 bodies at the moment, and we are searching for 96 others,” an officer at the emergency centre at the scene of the disaster told AFP, asking not to be identified.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said it was unclear whether those missing were buried under the landslide or had taken refuge.

“Conditions on the ground are pretty tough and we need heavy machines to clear the road that has been covered by the landslide,” Nugroho added.

Officials said that the ground was still unstable and most rescue work was being carried out manually. Heavy machines were trying to clear mud that had cut access to the location.

There was no phone signal in the area, making coordinating rescuing efforts difficult, they added.

The agency said that 200 rescuers and 500 volunteers had joined the search for the missing.

Landslides triggered by heavy rains and floods are common in tropical Indonesia during the rainy season.

The national disaster agency estimates around half the country’s 250 million population lives in areas prone to landslides.

The vast Indonesian archipelago is one of the most natural-disaster-prone nations on Earth, and is also frequently hit by earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Landslides and flash floods are common in Indonesia

At least eight people have died and more than 100 are missing after a landslide on Indonesia’s main island of Java.

Heavy rain caused the landslide near Jemblung village in central Java.

Disaster agency officials said rescue teams had taken almost 40 people to hospital, of whom four were in critical condition.

Hundreds of rescuers, including police and soldiers, have been trying to find survivors.

The country’s national disaster agency said hundreds of houses had been destroyed by the landslide.

“Conditions on the ground are pretty tough and we need heavy machines to clear the road that has been covered by the landslide,” agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

Flash floods and landslides are common in Indonesia, triggered by seasonal downpours.

Many of the inhabitants of the chain of 17,000 islands live in mountainous areas or near fertile flood plains.

A volcano in western Indonesia erupted on Thursday, unleashing a column of dark volcanic material high into the air weeks after villagers were returning home from an earlier eruption, officials said.

The explosion at Mount Sinabung, located in North Sumatra province, shot black ash 3 kilometers (nearly 2 miles) into the air, but there were no reports of injuries or damage, said National Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho. He said villages, farms and trees around the 2,600-meter (8,530-foot) -high rumbling volcano were covered in thick gray ash, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 3,300 people. Most were from two villages within 3 kilometers (nearly 2 miles) of the mountain in Karo district. No lava or debris spewed from the volcano, and nearby towns and villages were not in danger, but authorities warned tourists to stay away from the danger zone located 1.5 kilometers (1 mile) from the crater, Nugroho said. Last month, more than 15,000 people were forced to flee when the volcano rumbled to life after being dormant for three years, belching ash and smoke and igniting fires on its slopes. The volcano’s last major eruption in August 2010 killed two people and forced 30,000 others to flee. It caught many scientists off guard because it had been quiet for four centuries. Mount Sinabung is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which is prone to seismic upheaval due to its location on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanos and fault lines encircling the Pacific Basin.

The Peruvian Geophysics Institute (IGP) reports that Ubinas Volcano in Moquegua has once again shown signs of activity.

In early September, Ubinas registered a number of small explosions that initially cause alarm in the local population. However, as a column of potentially dangerous silica ash rose as high as two kilometers into the sky, authorities were forced to declare a State of Emergency in the area. The volcano had been quiet for several weeks, but now it has once again released smoke and ash into the air. Andina news agency reports that the incident occurred on the afternoon of Oct. 22, and lasted approximately two minutes. Equipment used by IGP scientists registered movement inside of the volcano before it released the cloud of smoke and ash. However, the incident is not being described as an eruption, because it lacked the explosive force necessary to categorize it as such. Andina reports that Ubinas Volcano is the most active volcano in Peru, having registered 24 eruptions over five centuries. Prior to the explosions in early September, the volcano had been dormant since 2009. The silica ash released by the volcano in September caused locals to experience medical problems such as headaches, stomach pain, and vomiting.

A new explosive eruption started yesterday night (23 Oct). An ash plume was detected drifting at an estimated 16,000 ft (5 km) altitude and drifting ESE.

At least 1 mm of ash have been deposited in the Nalychevo valley, a natural park between Zhupanovsky and Avachinsky volcanoes. Zhupanovsky volcano lies about 70 km northeast of the capital of Kamchatka, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and had its last eruption in 1959. It is a complex volcano composed of several overlapping cones aligned on a roughly east-west oriented axis. The new eruption comes from the same vent that has been also the site of all known historical eruptions, located west of the highest point of the volcanic massif.

A boat carrying as many as 170 suspected asylum seekers bound for Australia has sunk off the south coast of Indonesia, with up to 60 people feared dead or missing, Australian media reported on Wednesday.

The latest mishap at sea involving boat people came less than a week after Australia slammed the door on would-be refugees with a deal to send all boat arrivals to Papua New Guinea for assessment and eventual settlement.

As many as 170 people were on board the vessel, which broke up in heavy seas late on Tuesday, News Ltd reported.

More than 100 people, mostly from Iran and Sri Lanka, were rescued by fisherman in the area overnight, it said.

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) confirmed that a rescue operation was underway, without providing further information.

“Indonesian authorities are coordinating the rescue of that incident. AMSA is not involved at this stage,” a spokeswoman for the authority said. Indonesia’s National Search and Rescue (Basarnas) was not immediately available for comment.

Three people confirmed dead and others missing after asylum-seeker boat bound for Australia breaks up off coast of Java.

Three people are confirmed drowned and more deaths are feared after an asylum-seeker boat bound for Australia sank off West Java in Indonesia.

Australian media reported that the boat was carrying up to 170 people, mostly refugees from Sri Lanka and Iran, when it broke up and sank in heavy seas on Tuesday evening.

Indonesian authorities said that they had found 157 people alive and four dead, and searches were ongoing on Wednesday for others. They said the passengers were from Iran, Sri Lanka and possibly Iraq.

“We don’t know exactly how many were on board, so we’re focusing on searching for any more that may be out there,” Bandung search and rescue chief Rochmali told AFP early on Wednesday, adding the figure would likely be between 100 and 200.

“We will just focus on ensuring they’re well and making sure no one else is still at sea,” he said.

The Sydney Daily Telegraph, reporting from Java, said the engine of the boat started smoking and taking on water shortly after departure.

A man calling himself Soheil told the newspaper that he was the sole survivor of a group of 61 Iranians who set off from the fishing village of Cidaun.

The latest disaster on Wednesday came just days after Canberra announced a hardline new plan to send all unauthorised arrivals to its shores to Papua New Guinea.

Asylum-seekers arriving in Australian waters will now be sent to the Manus Island processing centre in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere in the Pacific nation for assessment, with no cap on the number that can be transferred.

They will not have chance to settle in Australia and will only allowed to live in Papua New Guinea if their asylum claims are approved.

‘Hollow and hypocritical’

Human rights groups have expressed outrage at Australia’s decision.

The Refugee Council of Australia said on Tuesday that the arrangement would exacerbate the regions challenges with people movement by undermining efforts to improve refugee protection for those who most needed it.

Paul Power, the council’s chief executive, said that Australia could not outsource its Refugee Convention responsibilities to a much poorer neighbour and remain credible in advocating that other nations improve protection standards for refugees.

“By unreasonably shifting its responsibilities for asylum seekers to Papua New Guinea through this Regional Resettlement Arrangement (RRA), Australias international advocacy for responsibility sharing has been exposed as hollow and hypocritical,” Power said in a written statement.

This arrangement is without precedent in the world. It cannot possibly be presented as an example of regional co-operation because it is little more than a wealthy country paying a much weaker neighbour to take on its international responsibilities to people seeking asylum. ” – aljazeera

At least three people, two of them children, died on Tuesday, when a boat carrying would-be asylum seekers to Australia sunk in Indonesia waters. An official said more than 150 survivors had been rescued, mostly from Iran and Iraq, but it was unclear how many more might be missing.

A training tunnel collapsed on Tuesday at the world’s second largest copper mine in eastern Indonesia, trapping at least 33 workers underground, the mine’s owner, Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc, said. Earlier reports, quoting a mine official at the scene, had said three workers were killed in the accident, but the Arizona-based firm denied any deaths had occurred. Rescue efforts were under way at the remote Grasberg mine in West Papua province. Output at the mine, which also has the world’s largest gold reserves and employs just over 24,000 contract and non-contract workers, was not expected to be significantly affected, the company said. “A tunnel in the underground training area collapsed, trapping a number of employees,” the company said in a statement. “The rescue process is difficult and will take some time to complete.”

At least 40 workers had been in an underground training facility when it collapsed early on Tuesday, the statement said. Three people escaped unhurt, while four were rescued and received medical treatment. “Freeport Indonesia does not expect this event to have a material effect on mining and milling operations or development activities,” the statement said. Government authorities had been informed, the company said. The collapse is one of a series of worker-related incidents at the mine in recent months. This month, a group of contract workers returned to work after successful pay talks ended a three-day work stoppage. The last major strike at Freeport Indonesia, in 2011, lasted for three months, caused copper and gold output to drop 15 percent and was Indonesia’s longest-ever industrial dispute. Freeport Indonesia says its sales are expected to reach 1.1 billion pounds of copper and 1.2 million ounces of gold in 2013, up 54 percent and 31 percent over 2012 figures, respectively, as mining moves into higher ore grades.

“Four workers have been pulled alive from a tunnel that collapsed at a mine in remote eastern Indonesia Tuesday but 33 others remained trapped, the US operator said.

Rontini was not hopeful for those still trapped. “In the past, similar tunnel collapses caused fatalities as people who were trapped couldn’t get enough oxygen.”

Freeport said 40 employees and contract workers had been in a classroom at the training facility when the tunnel collapsed at about 7:30 am but three managed to escape immediately.

Freeport said rescue operations were “difficult and will take some time to complete” but added “it would spare no effort” to save the trapped workers. The company added it did not expect production to be affected.

The company has not identified the nationalities of those involved in the accident, although the vast majority of the more than 24,000 workers at the mine are Indonesian. Neither police nor Freeport said why the accident happened.

The 2011 strike lasted three months and crippled production, only ending once the firm agreed to a huge pay rise.

The industrial action sparked a wave of deadly clashes between police and gunmen around the mine, with at least 11 people, all Indonesians, killed.

“A Lion Air plane carrying 108 people has crashed into the sea after overshooting the runway as it came into land at Balis Denpasar International Airport.

Officials said that all passengers and crew were safe, although at least seven people had been taken to Denpasars Sanglah Hospital with head wounds and broken bones. (BBC: 15 injured taken to hospital)

Many passengers arrived with wet clothes and bruises.

The Boeing 737-800 had been attempting to land at Ngurah Rai International Airport at about 3.50pm local time (5.50pm AEST) on Saturday when it overshot the runway.

Photographs shown on Indonesian television showed the planes fuselage had split into two parts just behind its wings, and the plane half submerged in shallow water.

Andis, a passenger who was on the flight, said there was a loud bang as the plane hit the water, prompting panic.

I looked down. It was suddenly sea, Andis said.

I realised that the plane was flying too low, but we still stayed calm until we heard a bang. There was panic.

A spokeswoman with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade in Canberra said efforts were being made to find out whether any Australians were on the flight.

The Australian Consulate-General in Bali is making urgent inquiries to determine whether any Australian citizens may have been involved in air crash is Bali on Saturday afternoon, the spokeswoman said.

At this time we are not aware that there are any Australian victims.

The Lion Air fight 904 was due to arrive at Denpasar at 3.40pm local time (5.40pm AEST) after leaving from Bandung about two hours earlier.

Initial reports suggested there were about 130 people on the flight.

But Eko Diantoro, an official from Bandung Airport, later said the flight manifest showed that the plane was carrying 101 passengers, including five children and one baby, as well as seven crew.

Lion Air commercial director Edward Sirait confirmed that some passengers had been taken to a hospital in Denpasar.

All passengers and crew are safe, 101 passengers and seven crew. Theyve been taken to the nearest hospital, he said.

Mr Sirait said that the plane was new, and began operating last year.

The plane is Boeing 737-800 NG, Next Generation. Its a new one, a 2012 product, he said.

Lion Air started operating in 2000 and services more than 36 destinations, mostly in Indonesia.

There are also fresh details about the unfolding tragedy with one of the survivors revealing that boat actually sank on Wednesday, and not on Friday morning as initially reported by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

Habibullah Hashimi, one of 14 men plucked from the water by fishermen off the coast of Sukabumi in West Java, said he was in the water for about 24 hours before help finally came.

The 29-year-old said there were 72 people aboard the vessel. All were ethnic Hazara from Afghanistan.

At least five asylum seekers had perished, Mr Hashimi said.

The death toll could rise further.

”The ship just broke,” he told AAP.

”We saw about five people dead. They were in the water.”

Mr Hashimi’s group had linked arms as they struggled to survive.

”The sea kept moving us around,” he said.

Mr Hashimi, who was on Friday afternoon recuperating in Bogor, also confirmed that the boat sank at about 8am on Wednesday.

The development came after a spokeswoman from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) initially reported that a boat may have sunk in the Sunda Strait at about midnight (3am AEST) on Friday.

”A people-smuggling vessel may have sunk in or near the Sunda Strait around 3am AEST today. Some passengers may have been rescued by a fishing vessel,” the spokeswoman said earlier on Friday.

The information was in turn passed on to the Indonesian national search and rescue agency BASARNAS.

But BASARNAS was unable to locate the area where the incident was believed to have occurred, prompting a scramble for information.

Provincial search and rescue offices in Jakarta and Lampung on the island of Sumatra also had little idea of what had happened, or where to look for survivors.

”We don’t have the coordinates for the area where we could search. Do you have that information? Please share it with us,” an officer with the Jakarta search and rescue office said when contacted by AAP.

”We only received information from BASARNAS that it’s in south of Sunda Strait and they’ve been rescued by local fishermen. But where is it? We’re now contacting local ports and others if they have such information.”

And Indonesia still hasn’t launched a rescue mission because the location of the sunken vessel hasn’t been found.

The search and rescue authorities were criticised last August when more than 100 asylum seekers drowned when their boat foundered in the Sunda Strait.

An aerial search was not launched until more than six hours after a distress call was received by the AMSA.

It was almost 24 hours before the first survivors were pulled from the water.

Indonesia: Warehouse collapse leaves 3 dead, 40 others believed buried – 081212 1625z

“Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA News) – Three people have been found dead while 40 others were believed to have been buried after a warehouse collapsed at Warehousing 88 Complex on Jalan Ir Sutami here on Saturday.

“Three people have been found dead and three others seriously injured,” chief of Biringkanaya Police Sector Commissioner Akbar Setiawan said here on Saturday.

The incident occurred at around 2pm on Saturday during a heavy rain that had presumably caused the land where the building stood to slide.

Efforts were still being made by the police assisted by military and Search and Rescue Team personnel to find other victims.

“The number of the dead victims is believed to rise as many are still buried and have not yet been found so far,” he said.

The Warehousing 88 on the Manis Industrial zone was set up in 2007 and has been fully used due to its location which is close to the Bitung Toll road.” antaranews.com

Makassar, Sulawesi Selatan (ANTARA News) – Tiga orang telah ditemukan tewas, sementara 40 orang lainnya diyakini telah terkubur setelah sebuah gudang runtuh di Pergudangan 88 Kompleks di Jalan Ir Sutami sini pada hari Sabtu.

“Tiga orang telah ditemukan tewas dan tiga lainnya luka parah,” Kepala Sektor Biringkanaya Komisaris Polisi Akbar Setiawan mengatakan di Jakarta, Sabtu.

Insiden itu terjadi sekitar pukul 2 pm pada hari Sabtu selama hujan lebat yang diduga menyebabkan tanah di mana bangunan itu berdiri untuk meluncur.

Upaya masih dibuat oleh polisi dibantu oleh personil militer dan Search and Rescue Team untuk menemukan korban lainnya.

“Jumlah korban tewas diyakini meningkat karena banyak yang masih terkubur dan belum ditemukan sejauh ini,” katanya.

Indonesia: Tornado strikes 10 villages in Sleman, 16 hurt and 519 homes damaged – 081212 1300z

More than a dozen people have been injured and hundreds of houses left damaged after a tornado swept through the Yogyakarta district of Sleman on Friday.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman said on Saturday that the tornado – which had a radius of two kilometers at a speed of 60 kilometers per hour – lasted for 10 minutes and hit 10 villages in Sleman, with the Bromonila village in the subdistrict of Purwomartani reporting the most damages.

“Two people were seriously injured and have to undergo treatment now, and 12 others were lightly wounded,” BNPB spokesman Sutopo Purwo said in a statement published at bnpb.go.id.

Sutopo said 519 houses in total were damaged and dozens of cattle sheds and hundreds of trees also reportedly collapsed.

The district head of Sleman has declared the area an emergency situation until Dec. 11.

“The Sleman office of the BPNB has established an emergency station and a makeshift kitchen in Bromonila village,” said Sutopo, adding that people displaced from their houses had been evacuated to safe places.

The tornado also disrupted some flights to and from the Adisucipto International Airport in Yogyakarta.

A Merpati Airlines plane from Bandung was forced to reroute to Surabaya and a Garuda Indonesia flight from Jakarta was forced to turn back.

Lebih dari selusin orang telah terluka dan ratusan rumah rusak setelah meninggalkan tornado menyapu melalui distrik Yogyakarta Sleman, Jumat.

Mitigasi Bencana Badan Nasional (BNPB) juru bicara mengatakan pada hari Sabtu bahwa tornado – yang memiliki radius dua kilometer dengan kecepatan 60 kilometer per jam – berlangsung selama 10 menit dan mencapai 10 desa di Sleman, dengan desa Bromonila di kecamatan dari Purwomartani melaporkan kerusakan yang paling.

“Dua orang luka berat dan harus menjalani perawatan sekarang, dan 12 orang lainnya luka ringan,” kata juru bicara BNPB Sutopo Purwo dalam sebuah pernyataan yang diterbitkan di bnpb.go.id.

Sutopo mengatakan 519 rumah rusak total dan puluhan kandang ternak dan ratusan pohon juga dilaporkan runtuh.

Bupati Sleman telah menyatakan daerah situasi darurat sampai 11 Desember.

“Kantor Sleman dari BPNB telah membentuk stasiun darurat dan dapur darurat di desa Bromonila,” kata Sutopo, menambahkan bahwa orang-orang mengungsi dari rumah mereka telah dievakuasi ke tempat yang aman.

Tornado juga mengganggu beberapa penerbangan ke dan dari Bandara Internasional Adisucipto di Yogyakarta.

Fishing boat with 22 aboard collides with cargo ship, off Miyagi Pref, Japan 9 rescued, 13 missing – Published 240912 1215Z

Officials from the Japan Coast Guard have stated that a Japanese fishing has collided with a large cargo ship in the Pacific Ocean on Monday.

The accident occurred just east of northern Japan, sending the 22 members of the fishing boat crew into the sea as their boat sank. Almost half of the crew has been rescued, but 13 are still missing.

At around 2:30 AM local time on Monday morning, the Horiei Maru, a 119-ton tuna-fishing boat, collided with the Nikkei Tiger, a 25,000-ton cargo ship identified as originating from Panama.

It’s not known yet what caused the accident exactly, but the coast guard says the collision took place in waters roughly 900 kilometers (560 miles) to the east of Miyagi Prefecture. The 22 member crew was made of 17 Japanese nationals and five Indonesians.

Responding to the distress call, the Japan Coast Guard has rescued five Japanese and four Indonesians as of 7 AM, however they are maintaining their search for the remaining members of the fishing crew.

The Nikkei Tiger cargo ship is said to be undamaged, and the members of its crew are all safe. Just last week the Japan Coast Guard came to help of another ship in distress off the coast of Nagasaki Prefecture.

A freight ship had caught fire, requiring the 12-member crew, including 10 Chinese, to be rescued.

A boat carrying around 150 suspected asylum seekers has capsized off northwest Australia today, just a week after 90 people drowned on a similar journey.

Dozens of asylum seekers are feared drowned after a second boatload of capsized in less than a week in Australian waters today.

The frail wooden boat was estimated to have been carrying about 150 people and there were fears that many had drowned as rescuers were making their way to the scene of the tragedy.

Mr Mal Larsen, from the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said rescue ships were beginning to arrive at the scene and some people were being pulled from the water.

‘They are doing their best to pull people out,’ he said. ‘It’s too early to say how many have been saved.’

A crowded boat carrying asylum seekers to Australia capsized Wednesday and 125 survivors and one body were recovered from the Indian Ocean, less than a week after more than 90 people drowned on a similar journey. An air and sea search was ongoing for as many as 20 people who could still be missing, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said. Three merchant ships that responded to the capsizing rescued 125 people, and the authority said one body was recovered. The area is midway between Christmas Island and the main Indonesian island of Java. The authority said up to 150 men, women and children may have been on the wooden Indonesian fishing boat. Prime Minister Julian Gillard told Parliament that two Australian warships and an air force aircraft that can drop life rafts on the sea joined the search by late Wednesday. The area is 200 kilometers (120 miles) north of Australia’s Christmas Island and 185 kilometers (115 kilometers) south of Java. The boat capsized in Indonesia’s search and rescue zone but Australian authorities had raised the alarm, Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman Jo Meehan said.

The first merchant ship reached the scene more than four hours later, she said. Last Thursday, 110 people were rescued when a boat carrying more than 200 mostly Afghan asylum seekers capsized only 24 kilometers (15 miles) from the latest tragedy. Only 17 bodies were recovered. The survivors’ refugee applications were being assessed at Christmas Island, where Australia runs an immigration detention center. Australia is a common destination for boats carrying asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Iraq, Sri Lanka and other poor or war-torn countries. Last week’s disaster rekindled debate in Parliament on how Australia should deter asylum seekers from risking the hazardous sea journey. The government wants to send new boat arrivals to Malaysia in exchange for accepting U.N.-recognized refugees living there. The opposition won’t support the legislation because Malaysia has not signed the Refugee Convention.

7 killed in East Java, Indonesia tourist bus crash, driver detained

Seven passengers of a Mutiara Indah Murni tourist bus died Sunday as bus they were traveling in crashed in Ngembal village, Tutur (Nongkojajar) district in Pasuruan regency, East Java, on Sunday.

Five passengers died on the scene, while two other died on the way to Ganesha Medica hospital in Purwosari.

Survivors said they smelled burning braking pads just before the accident as the bus was rolling downhill.

Passengers said the bus went out of control, especially after the driver, Slamet, slammed to the left in an attempt to avoid a motorcycle, kompas.com reported on Sunday.

Unfortunately, one of the bus wheels struck a large stone, causing the bus to roll several times before coming to rest on the shoulder of the opposing lane, blocking traffic along the highway.

The bus carried some 60 residents taking a tour from the Candi Lontar housing complex, located in the Sambikerep district of Surabaya, East Java.

They had just visited the Agro Bhakti Alam tourism site in Ngembal village and were heading for the Sengkaling public bath in Malang regency.

The bus had only traveled two kilometers from Agro Bhakti Alam when the accident occurred.

One of the passengers, Sasongko, said the bus had broken down in the Purwosari area on their way to Ngembal village.

He said the radiator leaked and the bus had braking problems. The driver sealed the leakage simply using a bar of soap. The leaking radiator showed that the bus was not roadworthy, he told kompas.com.

Nongkojajar Police chief Adj. Comr. Marwan Ishari Purnomo said the police had detained the driver for further questioning.
