Disaster Preparedness

“In Hawaii due to our isolation, we encourage all families to be prepared for 7 days instead of 72 hours. It will take time following a disaster for a logistics bridge to be built to Hawaii if our harbors and airports are affected by a major disaster and we may be relying on our own resources longer than other places within the United States. The following information is provided to help you better develop your own disaster plan and improve your family, business and community’s resiliency.” – Hawaii Red Cross

Chile earthquake: Five dead and tsunami alert issued after 8.2 quake

Hawaii

Per PTWC, no major tsunami coming. There will be sea level changes + strong currents, so swimmers + boaters need to be aware – @rqskye 0517 UTC (Digital volunteer for disaster relief)

8.2 quake hits Northern Chile triggering widespread tsunami warning

“Armed Forces are maintaining order on the streets of Iquique amid fires and prison escapes following tsunami evacuation order for South America’s Pacific coast.

A massive earthquake struck off the coast of Northern Chile on Tuesday evening prompting tsunami warnings across the Pacific coast, with evacuation ordered for the entire zone until the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck around 55 miles southeast of Cuya, at 8:46 p.m. local time. So far at least 20 aftershocks have been registered in the area with the largest measuring around 5 on the Richter scale.

That warning was lifted for areas south of Puerto Chacabuco, in Aysén Region, past midnight Tuesday. By 3 a.m. Wednesday morning, it was also removed between the cities of Antofagasta and Valparaíso, including  the islands of San Félix and Juan Fernández archepelago. At time of press it did not include Rapa Nui, or Easter Island.

The Interior Ministry has confirmed five deaths in Iquique and surrounding areas and at least three people seriously injured so far. Minister Rodrigo Peñailillo also stated that fires in Iquique and Arica had been brought under control.

The National Emergency Service (Onemi) said that more than 900,000 people evacuated to safety zones across the nation.” – Santiago Times

Chile Tsunami Update, No Wave expected in the Western Pacific – WestPacWx

A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 8.2 has struck off the coast of Chile, triggering a tsunami that has already started hitting the coastline.

Already a 2 meter high wave was reported along the Chili coast. At this time tsunami warnings remain in effect for much of the western sea boards of South American and Mexico.

No warnings have been issued for areas in the western pacific. But if the wave generated is strong enough the image below will show where it would hit followed by an image of when it would hit based on tsunami forecast models.

I do want to note though. NO TSUNAMI is expected at this time in the western pacific. NONE! But if it changes we will update you.

Best thing to do stay tuned to updates from your official agency and monitor if any changes habe been put in place.

US: Fisherman Fights Shark For Tuna Off Coast Of Hawaii (Video) – 120413 1915z

(Video credit: Vox151)

Every fisherman has a story about the one that got away, but Isaac Brumaghim was lucky enough to get video proof of his battle with a big fish.

He was even luckier to survive his face-to-face encounter with an agitated shark

On Sunday, Brumaghim, 37, was fishing two miles off the coast of Oahu, Hawaii, when a tiger shark took an interest in his catch. The 400-to-500 pound carnivore nearly jumped into his kayak to grab a kawakawa he’d just hooked.

“I was reeling in the kawakawa and at the last moment I could see right behind that there was something big and green. And I was kind wondering like what was going on there,” Brumaghim told KHON-TV. “And it happened so fast. Next thing you know the kawa took off again and then the shark splashed and that’s when I realized that there was a shark trying to get the kawakawa.”

The frenzied footage was captured in a camera Brumaghim mounted on his kayak.

Marine biologist Wayne Samiere reviewed the clip said the shark did what comes naturally.

“If a fish is distressed it sends out electrical vibration signals, plus if it’s hooked it’s probably also leaking some blood, and all a shark needs is just one little small taste of that signal and it’s going to make a beeline right for that target,” Samiere told Hawaii News Now. “It would have been an intimidating thing to be around and in the water.”

The experience still rattles Brumaghim, who, fortunately, escaped uninjured.

“It definitely was an adrenaline rush for me out there,” he said, according to NPR.com. “Life and death right in front of you. It put some things into perspective.”

But not that much.

After his encounter with the shark — which the shark won — Brumaghim stayed in the seas long enough to catch two more fish, OutdoorLife.com reported.

Surfer punches 10ft tiger #shark on nose after it bite his foot. #Maritime #Surfing #News

“The average surfer may finally be able to score some uncrowded waves on North Shore. So why aren’t we jumping for joy? Probably because sometime around 12:45pm on Tuesday, what is believed to have been a 10-foot tiger shark bit down on the left foot of Joshua Holley, a 28-year-old surfer from Waialua who had been enjoying a murky solo session on the North Shore of Oahu.

“I felt this unreal push on the left side of my body and it was like this popping sensation on my foot. I look down to my left and I see this huge dorsal fin,”

Holley told Hawaii News Now.”Survival mode kicked in and I punched it really hard once and then twice. I didn’t want to panic or go into shock or anything like that.” The attack occurred in the channel between Alligator Rock and Leftovers, eerily resembling another grisly encounter at the same spot almost two decades ago. “We had that rash of shark attacks across the North Shore in 1992,” remembers North Shore fixture Bernie Baker. “The incident at Leftovers that took the life of a bodyboarder was under identical wind conditions — a hard west sea breeze pushing up from the Haleiwa side of the North Shore.

His board was found the next morning a mile up the coast, blown across the ocean through the night and found in the Waimea Bay stream pond.” That attack bookmarked a horrifying period in Hawaiian history that left ocean scientists baffled, as tiger sharks began attacking surfers and swimmers on April 3rd, 1991, including four fatalities and nine other attacks on waveriders along three islands over the next 33 months. Many execs in the tourism industry and locals alike rallied for a massive extermination campaign, while other native Hawaiians cited that sharks were aumakua (ancestral guardians) and should be spared. Prior to this bloody era, the only fatality directly attributed to a shark attack occurred in 1958. With two strangers named Thomas and Jason assisting him to shore, Holley was taken to Wahiawa General Hospital. He is now recovering at home while longtime North Shore residents pray this isn’t another toothy trend like the one that began plaguing the Aloha State almost 21 years ago to the day of Holley’s attack. In the meantime, waveriders and swimmers alike are urged to stay out of the water until lifeguards deem it safe to return. Warning signs are posted at Ali’i Beach Park, Chun’s Reef Support Park, Ehukai Beach Park, Haleiwa Beach Park, Ke’Waena Beach Park, Laniakea Beach Support Park, Sunset Beach Park and Wai.”
