    Typhoon Neoguri rapidly intensified for the past 12hrs from 65kt to 115kt. Models forecast continues to favor a 150-160kt category 5 system for the next 36-48hrs. This scenario I attributes to warmer SST high ohc and weak shear including to the improving equatorial and poleward outflows. Japan’s southern island should be bracing for this system.

    Typhoon‬ ‪Neoguri‬ is rapidly strengthening over the open waters of the Pacific. It will first impact ‪‎Okinawa‬ on Tuesday, with winds of 145 knots (165 mph), gusting to 175 knots (200 mph). Although weakening by then, the typhoon will next impact ‪#‎Kyushu‬ with winds of 125 knots gusting to 150 knots before moving northeast onto ‪#‎Honshu‬ by the end of the 5-day forecast period.

    NW PACIFIC – Neoguri Grows into a Typhoon
    Satellite data has helped confirm that Neoguri has become a typhoon in the Northwestern Pacific after it passed Guam.
    On July 5 at 0900 UTC (5 a.m. EDT) it was centered near 16.0 north and 137.0 east, about 813 nautical miles southeast of Kadena Air Base. It was moving west-northwest at 14 knots and had maximum sustained winds near 115 knots.
    This visible image of Neoguri was taken by the MODIS instrument aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite on July 5 as it passed overhead. Neoguri’s eye was clearly visible.
    Typhoon Neoguri is moving northwest and strengthening quickly. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center expects that the storm will peak at 150 knots (132 mph/213 kph) and move past Kadena before making landfall in Kyushu by July 10.
