At least 30 wounded in blast at Tanzanian church: police
AFP: “At least 30 people were injured including three seriously in an explosion Sunday at a church in the northern Tanzanian city of Arusha, police said.
“There have been 30 people wounded, three in a serious condition, and one person has been arrested,” said regional police chief Liberatus Sabas.
It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion.
“This a sad day, our security forces are mobilised, and the culprits will be arrested and brought to justice,” said Arusha’s commissioner Magesa Mulongo.
“For the time being we don’t know if it is a bomb,” he added.
The blast took place outside a Roman Catholic church in Arusha, a town popular with tourists visiting the nearby Serengeti national park and snowcapped Mount Kilimanjaro.”
Blast hits Catholic church in northern Tanzania – police
“DAR ES SALAAM (Reuters) – A suspected bomb blast struck a Catholic church in the northern Tanzanian town of Arusha on Sunday, police said, wounding a number of people.
Sectarian tensions have been simmering in east Africa’s second biggest economy after two Christian leaders were killed in the predominantly Muslim islands of Zanzibar earlier this year and there have been attacks on Muslim leaders and mosques.
“Some kind of explosion went off at the church. It is believed to have been a bomb but we don’t know what type of bomb it was,” Tanzania police spokesperson Advera Senso said.
Senso could not confirm if anyone had been killed in the attack or how many had been wounded.
Tanzania’s foreign affairs minister Bernard Membe said in a message on Twitter he was “deeply shocked” by the explosion.
President Jakaya Kikwete has warned about rising religious tensions in several televised addresses.

Found on Catholic forum: (UNCONFIRMED) “This morning there’s been a bomb attack on a church in Arusha, city in the North on Tanzania.
There was an occasion to mark the establishment of a new parish whereby a representative from the Vatican was there to bless the occasion. During the mass, a man who was hiding, came out and threw a petrol bomb in the church which exploded, then boarded a vehicle and escaped.
There was a lot of mayhem, but the congregation refused to leave the church, insisting that the mass should continue, saying that they can kill them inside the church but they weren’t going anywhere.
There are lots of injuries (77 last time I checked) and 1 or 3 lives lost (hard to get accurate facts in this part of the world….).” – altms on http://forums.catholic.com/showthread.php?t=783364
