US: 2 school buses crash in Iowa, 40 students, 2 bus drivers injured – 170413 1610z

At least 40 students and two bus drivers were injured in an accident Tuesday involving two school buses from the Sumner-Fredericksburg School District.

A total of 25 students were taken to Sumner Community Memorial Hospital, according to community relations manager Kyle Teeling.

Teeling said one student was admitted for observation overnight.
Jennifer Monteith, with Mercy Medical Center in New Hampton, said 11 students were transported to the hospital Tuesday evening.
The students were all in stable conditions with minor injuries.
A total of 11 students were taken to Palmer Lutheran Hospital in West Union, according to a hospital official.
None of the injuries were life-threatening.
The number of students hurt in the accident was not confirmed by Senior Trooper Mark Sigwarth with the Iowa State Patrol. But Sigwarth did say none of the injuries were considered life threatening.
“We are kind of counting our blessings out here at the side of the road today,” he said.
Both bus drivers were also taken to local hospitals, Sigwarth added.
The crash was reported after 3:30 p.m. northwest of Sumner on Viking Avenue south of 120th Street.
One of the buses was seen in the east ditch and near a pole.
The second school bus was pointed southbound on the shoulder of Viking Avenue.
It’s back end sustained damage. Iowa State Patrol and Bremer County Sheriff’s Department responded to the accident.

“SUMNER, Iowa – 43 passengers and two bus drivers were injured in an accident Tuesday involving two school buses from the Sumner-Fredericksburg School District.

The crash was reported after 3:30 p.m. northwest of Sumner on Viking Avenue south of 120th Street.

A south bound Sumner-Fredericksburg school bus was driving behind a farm tractor when another Sumner-Fredericksburg school bus rear ended the first school bus.

The bus driver of the second bus, 63-year-old Steven Crawford, was cited for failure to maintain control.
