Police search for missing York woman continues

Officers coordinating the search for missing York woman, Sheila Sykes, will today (Sunday 3 March 2013) focus their efforts in an area close to where she was last seen.

A police air support unit along with volunteers from the Scarborough Search and Rescue Team will be searching the Hagg Wood area, south east of Dunnington.

The Swaledale Mountain Rescue Team will also search along the sides of the River Derwent.

Sheila Sykes, 73, has not been seen since leaving her home address in Dunnington at 8pm on Friday 1 March 2013.

She is described as being white, 5ft 3in tall, with a medium build and short dyed blonde hair. When she was last seen Sheila was wearing a white hooded coat with black check, black trousers and black patent leather shoes.

Although the searches are focusing in the local area, it is believed that Sheila has access to a bus pass and may have travelled further afield.

Police Sergeant Carol Horner, of Clifton Moor Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “Sheila, all of you family are very concerned to know that you are safe and well. If you see or hear this appeal, please get in touch with them straight away so that they can speak to you. If you would prefer, you can contact the police directly.

“Although the searches are taking place locally, I am asking members of the public to keep an eye out for Sheila and if they see a woman matching her description to contact North Yorkshire Police straight away.”

Anyone who can help to locate Sheila Sykes is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 1 and pass the information to the Force Control Room.

Missing York woman – body found

“Officers searching for missing woman Sheila Sykes, have located a body.

It was found close to Hagg Wood, Dunnington, just before 5pm on Sunday 3 March 2013.

Sheila has not been seen since Friday 1 March 2013.

Mrs Syke’s next of kin have been informed of the discovery.

We are not yet in a position to formally identify the body

The search for Sheila has been stood down.

The family have asked for their privacy to be respected at this difficult time.
